Wire to Judge
In passing Sentences ranging from six weeks to a year’s imprisonment at Newcastle Assizes on seven men who were charged with riot and assault following a means test demonstration at North Shields, Mr Justice Goddard mentioned a telegram which he received soon after the opening of the trial. The tolcgram he said, read:—“Mass meeting of 500 in Newcastle demand acquittal of North Shields unemployed.” His lordship added: —"It is difficult to understand in those days how anybody can bo so foolish or wrongheaded as to think they can interfere in this way with the course of justice. People who send the'se telegrams cannot know that it is gross contempt of court, for which they are liable to receive a heavy sentence.”
