The death is announced by cable from London, of Mr. George Moore, the famous Irish novolist and essayist. Tho Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Mansford, have returned from a visit to Napior where they took part in the “New Napier” carnival. In succession to Sub-Inspector T. Gibson, promoted from Auckland to be inspector in chargo of Southland, Seuior-Sorgeant J. Sweeney, of Hamilton, has been appointed Chief Detective in Auckland. Detective-Sergeant R. J. Issell, Avho has boon police photographer and has also filled tho position of llngorprint expert in tho Criminal Investigation Department, is to go to Stratford as Sergeant in the uniform branch and Avill be in chargo there. A mooting of tho Foxton Harbour Hoard Avas neld on Saturday evening to consider tho appointment for the position of harbourmaster at tho port of Foxton. In all seventeen applications Averc received for tho position and after careful consideration tho Hoard decided to appoint Captain A. Nelson of Blenheim, as harbourmaster and pilot. Captain Nelson, who is at present pilot at Wairau bar, is rvclllaiown on the coast and has had considerable experience in tho working of bar harbours. Comparatively a young man, during tho war ho sciwed as an officer on one of the overseas vessels engaged in transporting New Zealand troops and subsequently for some years was in tho employ of Messrs. Eckford and Co., of Blenheim as master of the auxiliary scoav, Echo. He also for some time avus master of one of the Wellington harbour ferries, while later still was first mato of the wcllknoryn Foxton trader, S.S. Kennedy. When the S.S. Himntangi (ono of tho largest steamers ever engaged in the Foxton trade) was purchased a few years ago, Captain Nelson was appointed master of that vessel which he commanded Avith signal success. It is understood that the new pilot will commence his duties at tho Manawatu heads on February first.
