Holiday Racing at Ashhurst To-day

WlJl-AND-PLACE BETTING

GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED AT POPULAR FIXTURE

With good and even fields engaged, tho Ashhurst-Polmngina Racing Club’s annual meeting, which is being held on the Ashhurst racecourse to-day, should attract widespread interest, particularly so in view of tho fact that neigtibouring clubs, which usually race in January, have postponed their fixtures until later in the season. It is worthy of note that tho totalisator will bo operated on tho win-aud-plaee dividend system which has been attended wnn such success in other centres and that the gate charges have been reduced to meet the times, the payment, of five shillings taking men through to the lawn, while ladies will bo admitted for two shillings. The first race is timed to start at 11.45 a.m. and trains leave Palmerston North for Ashhurst at 7.10 a.m. and 9.55 a.m. (special) and 12.25 p.m. 11.45hack HURDLES HANDICAP, of 75

The llrst event on the programme is the Hack Handicap Hurdles which is timed to start at 11. do a.m. and for which there are nino horses accepted. Riotous and Kimbo are at the head of the weights with 10.5 apiece and on 'Marton form Kimbo, which won eacii day, should not bo troubled with the weight. Riotous, however, ran well at the Marton meeting and may turn the tables on the Clive-trained hurdler. The top-weights appear to stand out but Ganpat would only have to be able to jump well to have a good show in this moderate field. Of the others Invictus and Ex Do no appear to have best credentials. When the machine closes it may be found that the public have gono for Kimbo and Riotous.

Eight horses are engaged in the Komako Hack Handicap and Cuddle, with 9.1, has pride of . place. Her recent form has been good enough to suggest that the weight should not trouble her in this event. Golden Shadow showed good form at M&nawatu .when he finished second to Aiguille. Lady Court is another which ran into places during the holiday raeing, her efforts being at the Marton meeting. Of the others Acron and Tiger Gain make most appeal. The betting may favour the chances of Golden Shadow, Cuddle and Lady Court,

Tlie Ashhurst Cup has drawn a pretty good lield. Of those engaged (lanpat has been accepted for tho hurdles while Blacksmith figures in the last event for which he may be reserved. La Poupee fell at Trentham on Saturday and is an unlikely starter. Fiji and Habit are at the head of the card and Fiji’s form, in tho Wellington Cup was so outstanding that it is almost certain that he will go out favourite. Habit ran well forward during the holidays and. is bound to have friends to-day for she is a good

sort -when right. Brambletorn is improving and he will command Tespect to-day. The samo can bo said of Arajcan. Grand Jury has not ■ struck his right form this season but ho usually comes to light about this time. Three that will appeal are Fiji, Brambletorn and Grand Jury. ■ . 2.0"

The Novice Stakes is a Tace for two-year-olds and upwards that have never won a race. Three that will have friends are Lavina, Grand Joy and Dakar. 2.45“

The Baumai Handicap has drawn an acceptance of half a dozen. Golden Shadow ’s form in the Komako Hack will give investors an indication of his chances in this event. Should be win the second race he will, no doubt, suffer a penalty, but, even so, could not be left out of calculations. Night Speaker is a speedy soTt and w r as a winner during the holidays. So was Grand Lahu, the top-weight. Morrath started at Trentham on Saturday but without success. The favourite may be Golden Shadow, Night Speaker or Grand Lahu. 3.30-

The open sprint, the Pohangina Handicap, has attracted a really, good class field. Of the 11 acceptors Wastland may not 3tart. Consent is at the head of the weights with 9.0 and he would only need to be at his best to be regarded as something in the nature of a “sitter” for this event. L. G. Morns will be in the saddle so that Consent should not be handicapped in the matter of a Tider. The turning course should suit the speedy Kaihoro, also Aston, Of the others All Humbug, Arvada, Leisure, Sir Pombal and False .Scent will all have to be taken into account and the betting may take a wide range with most support for All Humbug, Kaihoro and Consent. 4.15-

Of the Siberia Hack field, Cuddle, Speed and Lady Court are engaged earlier in the day. The top-weight is Arena, a brilliant filly, and others likely to win races of this description are Haulbowline and Eight Bower. These may be the ones sorted out by the public. 5.0-

The last event on the programme is Jhe Manawatu Gorge Hack Handicap ■which, is timed to start at five o’clock. Anemometer has pride of place and should not find 9.0 too much in this company. Blacksmith Taced at Wellington but without success but he will have support for this race. The two at the head of the card appear to dominate the position and of the others White Squall and Invictus have the hest credentials. Preference may be shown for Anemometer, Blacksmith and .White Squall. The acceptances are as under:— Biding Engagements. The Marton trainer, L. G. Morris, returned home from Trentham’on Saturday. He will be at Ashhurst to-day and will pilot Fiji, Dakar, Consent and Arena. W. J. McDowell has been engaged for Grand Jury, Tannin, Knollmero and Cotfield. L. Faulkner rides Lady Court, Sir Borneo and King Peg. H. D. Bobinson will be up on Golden Shadow and Arajean. S. Anderson’s mounts are Tiger Gain, Grand Lahu, Anemometer, All Humbug and Habit. B. C. Miles will pilot Riotous. STALLIONS AND THEIR PROGENY There was a lot of talk about limiting stallions in England and Ireland to 45 mares, but that idea was evidently not generally favoured. Knight of the Garter, whose fee is £49, was mated with 58 mares in 1931, and 46 live foals resulted. In the same season, Blandford (400 gns fee) had 48 mares, and his figures were: 24 living foals, 2 dead or slipped, and 17 barren. Of the 45 marcs sent to Warden of the Marches (200 gns fee), 13 proved barren, and Papyrus (400 gns fee) failed with 13 of his 44 mates. Buchan (400 gns)had the poor average- of 12 living foals from 37 mares; and Gainsborough, another 400 gns stallion, had 21 from 40. Solario (50,0 gns) did not do badly with 26 living foals from 37 mares, but it was no wonder Call Boy’s fee was dropped from 400 gns to 250 gns, with a proviso of ‘.‘No foal, no fee.” Seventeen of the 21 mares sent to him missed. Felstead (300 gns) another. Derby > winner, did particularly well with 28 living foals from 39 mares,
