Naval Officer Sentenced
Commander J. G. Sutton, of H.M.'s Resource, was found guilty of the manslaughter of a Limasol (Cyprus) hotelkeeper named Apostolides, and was sentenced to six months imprisonment, Notice of appeal was given, and the sentence was suspended pending the hearing of the appeal. Bail of £3OO was allowed. The verdict was followed by a dramatic incident, Captain Sutton exclaiming emphatically: "I did not strike the man. I have a clear conscience about the matter.” The prosecution alleged that a quarrel broke out between the hotel-kepcr and Commander Sutton, following his Teturn to thehotel with a Turkish dancing girl. The court considered that the evidence showed that some troublo had occurred at the hotel, and drew the inference that Commander Sutton had strutclc Apostolides. The court refused an application for compensation made oh behalf of Apostolides’ widow and children.
