Horticultural Society Of Palmerston North

ANNUAL MEETING LAST EVENING

Mr. W. Chapman prosidea over the annual meeting of tho Palmerston North Horticultural Society, held last evening. Thorc was an attendance of approximately 20 members, numerousapologies .for unavoidable absence being received. The annual report (previously published) and the balance-sheet were, adopted. The society took the opportunity of thanking all who had assisted at tac shows. A largo band of willing helpers, ho said, were always present to do the vast amount of work connected with theso functions. There were a large number of entries to be dealt with, and all of these required much individual attention. In regard to the balance-shot, he said that there was a credit halanco of £3O 19s 9d, the chairman commenting that this was very satisfactory. Officers Elected

Tho following officers were elected for the ensuing season: — Patron, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.; president, the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford; auditor, Mr. Grant Sim; hon. secretary, Mr. \V. M. Tapp; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. Gallaiul.

A strong general committee of 15 ladies and 22 gentlemen was appointed, while there wero also approximately 30 vice-presidents elected to office. Several new members were elected to membership, thes including Miss M. E. Fram and Messrs. H. Christmas and T. M. N. Rodgers. Mr. Ilartog made an appeal for members to bring along further enthusiasts, stating that if each brought one extra member the total would sooii be satisfactory.

The secretary presented to the meeting a proposal to affiliate with the Now Zealand Institute of Horticulture. In this connection flower circles had been commenced with the combination of the Palmerston North branch of the New Zealand Institute and the Palmerston North Horticultural Society, and this, he said, had already yielded splendid results. He moved tho affiliation, this being second and carried unanimously. It was mentioned that Manawatu had intended .to provide a district display at the National Flower Show at Wellington next week, and had applied for 500 square feet, but this had subsequently been abandoned owing to dissention at Wellington over tho venue of the fixture. Manawatu had withdrawn owing to the small amount of space available. It was now proposed to hold a district display, lasting three days, at Palmerston North in January, 1934, and, in this regard, a meeting would bo called in tho city shortly.. Mr. Grey added that later advice from Wellington had been to tho effect that moro spacewould be allotted, but even this had not been accepted. He said that a strong committee would bo appointed for the Palmerston North show and all details attended to. It was stated, in reply to a question, that the dates for tho society’s shows were fixed by the committee, Mr. Grey suggesting that the chrysanthemum show be held a week earlier than was usual. , The prizes donated by the ladies committee for the men’s decorated table at the last show were presented to Mr. Shailer Just (in absentia), and Mr. Galland second. It was decided to pay half the telephone rental to the secretary, who was also granted an honorarium. A committee meeting was held later when Mr. Chapman was Te-elected chairman.
