The dentist's family was at the seaside for the holidays and he was baching. The telephone bell rang, and anguished tones at tho other end of the wire told of a raging toothache. Could tho dentist possibly go to his rooms and remove the aching tooth? Dentists arc but human. It was late, but tho dentist changed from slippers to shoes and went off urgently to his surgery in the city. Hie waited, but no patient appeared. So ho returned home. In his absence his house had been thoroughly ransacked. While engaged in carting metal from tho Manawatu river near tho To Matai road this week, Mr. A. L. Woodd had a narrow escape from drowning. While crossing tho r.iver, in which there was a frcSh, the horse Mr. Woodd was driving stumbled in the middle, lost its footing and was swept downstream into a deep hole, and camo to rest against a submerged log. In endeavour? ing to free the horse, which was completely out of sight, Mr. Woodd received a kick on tho head which rendered him partly unconscious. After being carried down tho river some 200 yards he -was caught on a log and was able to climb out to tho bank, where he collapsed and knew no more until three hours later when a search was being made for him, .The horse was droWfiSiU '
