Telescopic Words

NEW YORK, Dec. 24. Dr. Frank Vizetclly, in the new Funk and Wagnall dictionary, of which ha is’ editor, has given official recognition, to tho protogram and tho telescopic word. A protogram is a word made up from initial letters, such as “nep” for "new economic policy,’’ or "Socony,’' meaning the ‘‘Standard Oil Company of New York." Philologists have been impressed by the possibilities of tho general protogrammatisation of the United States. Dr. Vizetclly says: “The whole campaign of the Republican party—pardon me, ‘Reparty’ —could have been, compressed into the word ‘Pijarc’ (‘Prosperity is just around the corner’), to which the ‘Demparty’ (‘Democratic party”) could have replied; ‘Whac’J a telescopic word for ‘What corner’?”
