PROGRESS OF TOURNEY Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dee. 39. The fifth round of the chess congress commenced this morning. At tho lunch adjournment one game had beon concluded—between Miller and Sevevtic. It resulted in a legitimate draw, making Severne’s fifth draw'. Goldstein and Jones played a queen’s pawn game conducted on unusual Hives. Goldstein commenced with a strong king attack, and at the adjournment the game w T as at a critical state. In the Crackenthorp v. Hicks match the French defence was used. The Australian adopted the Nimzovitch attack and obtained some advantage in position. Scott.—A Eeti opening game, which proceeded later on hypermodern lines. At the adjournment Scott was endeavouring to work up an attack on Erskine's king. Maddox scored his first win playing his club mate, Jones. The latter had his sixth successive loss. Hicks and Fauknor played a French defence game in which the forces were level. In the Boyer v. Miller game, a French dofence, Beyor won by a smart sacrifice.
