Volunteer Labour Copes With Work
UNDER CHAIN SYSTEM There has been no change in the freezing dispute at Wellington. At both the Wellington Meat Export Company's works at Ngakaurnnga and the Gear Company's works at Petone the chain system is showing excellent results, and good tallies are being registered. The men at Ngahauranga are coping well with the quantity of stock offering, which is about up to the normal input of the average year. Last year was an exceptionally early season for killing, but in comparison with the average of the four previous years the figures being registered are regarded as most satisfactory. It is expected that in the Now Year there will be a decided increase in the amount of stock forwarded to the works, but no difficulty is anticipated in dealing with it. The men are improving daily at their work, and it will be only a matter, if the need arises, of engaging extra men, of whom there are said to bo plenty available. It was expected that the 5000 mark would be reached at the Gear Company's works yestorday, a figure which is regarded as very gratifying in the circumstances. About 120 men arc working under the chain system, which is said to be operating very well indeed. The quality of the work is improving daily. “We have never looked back since the system was put into operation, M said one of the company s official's yesterday. A few stands nTe still available for unionists if they apply for re-engagement. Union officials had no comment to make on the situation yesterday.
