Prom Our Own Correspondent.Tlio Norsewood tennis team visited Takapua last Wednesday afternoon to engage in a match with the local club, and for the first time this season suffered defeat, Talcapau winning by AO sets to 4. Cato beat Miss Ashcroft, 7 —4; Miss Craig lost to Miss Wright, 5 —7; Miss Black beat Miss Edgecombe, 73; Miss Smith beat Mrs. Culliford, 7—o. Men’s doubles: R. and A. The Norsewood school held the annual presentation of the dux medal, certificates and gifts from a Christmas tree for the younger children on Thursday afternoon, the Town hall being well filled by a gathering of parents and friends. Mr. W. H. Ridge (chairman of school committee) presided, Mi r . H. Cuthbertson, member of, the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, Rev. Mr. Bates, of Takapau, Rev. Mr. Aker, Mr. A. F. Culliford (secretary) and the headmaster, Mr. H. E. Fossette, Deiug with him on the platform. An apology for absence was received from Mr. H. S. M. Quigley (Dannovirke). Mr. Ridge gave a brief summary of the work of the committee during the past year and congratulated the teaching staff on the excellent results attained by the scholars. He also expressed regret that Miss G. McKenzie was severing her connection with the school and wished her success in her new appointment wherever it may be. In conclusion, ho thanked tho parents for their co-operation and wished all present the best of good wishes for the Christmas season. Mr. W. Cuthbertson, in a short address, gave the children a word of good advice as to the future, wishing them every happiness for Christmas and New Year. Ho then called on George Culliford and presented him with tho dux medal, complimenting him on his achievement and hoping it would inspire him to greater success in the future. The following received their proficiency certificates: Ruth Anderson, Molly Barclay, Joyce Bishop, Nora Hartinott, Elizabeth Mearing, Joyce Nikolaison, Unice Olsen, Mary Wilson, Ken Armstrong, Omer Bishop, Maurice Coady, George Culliford, Lindsay Dahlberg, John Furneau, Walter Haycock, iucx Logan, lan McCulloch, Ronald Mead, Ray Reisima, and Siddle Schofield. The Rev. Mr. Aker then presented the attendance certificates commenting on the very largo number who had gained these. At this stage of the proceedings a “wireless” message a.rived to that Father Ckrismas was nearing Norsewood in his aeroplane and bringing all small children a present. Amidst a simmer of excitement ho duly arrived and after suitably greeting the children, ho handed to each of the little ones a gift from a well-laden Christmas tree. He also presented Miss Mcldrum (infant mistress) and her assistant, Miss McKenzie, with a gift and after wishing them all a happy Christmas, departed on his w f ay. The singing of the National Anthem concluded tho afternoon. Mr. Archie Anderson, of Ngamoko road, suffered a severe loss about jj. p.m. last Thursday night when his up-to-date hay and milking shed was completely destroyed by fire. Mr.. Rex Swarbrick, who was passing, was the first to notice the blaze ana though he promptly gave the alarm, the flames had too strong a hold and practically nothing was saved. Although covered by insurance, Mr- Anderson will be a heavy loser as a large quantity of tins season’s hay had been stored and the milking plant and accessories are rendered useless. No explanation can be given as to how the fire originated. Mr. and Mrs. F. Edkins and family, of Danncvirke, arc the guests of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Mather, Napier road.
