Milson

From, Our Own Correspondent. One of the most successful concerts took .place in the Milson hall on Friday. night, tho occasion being the breaking-up of tho Milson School. The function was arranged by the ladies’ committee, assisted by tho members of the school committee. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers and greenery, and a Christmas tree laden with toys. Mr. F. ,G. Murphy had charge of the arrangements, assisted by Mr. McEwan, headmaster. The concert ■ programme opened with a chorus bv tho school children, the next item being given by Miss Dougherty (two numbers), followed by a humorous sketch and recitation by Miss Heggic. Miss AViison and Miss Doherty then gave two duets. Miss Campbell in a humorous sketch received enthusiastic applause. Mr. Jackson then rendered two >numbcrs, fololwed by a folk dance by tho girls of tho upper standards. Mr. Cronin was then heard to advantage in two numbers, one being in ; Maori. ' Miss Heggio sang two numbers, and the concert programme concluded with a chorus by tho pupils. Mr. McKegg then took charge and led-ih .a community sing, being assisted by Mr. McLaehlan at tho piano. This : proved a great success and Me McKegg proved a capable leader. Tho opportunity was then taken to present to the Milson School the Herbert Smith Trust Shield, which was won in the recent competitions. The presentation was made by Mr. W. L. Fitzhcrbert, chairman of the Manawatu Head Centro of the Royal LifeSaving • Society. Mr. Fitzhcrbert congratulated; tho winners on their success, stating that team work must be cultivated. Individuality alone was not sufficient. He realised that special merit was attached to the shield in view of the fact that Milson School had to travel to Terrace End swimming baths. He trusted the day was not- far distant when Milson would have baths of its own. Mr. Fitzherbert then handed over the handsome trophy and congratulated the team on being the first holders. Mr.- Small, secretary to the society, endorsed Mr. Fitzherbert’s remarks, and also congratulated the children. Mr. Murphy, chairman, then thanked those who had made the evening a success and tch artists who all came some distance to give of their best. He then handed good attendance certificates to the following pupils, who never lost one half-day in the year:— lan Rowan, Nola Buhner, Eric Buhner, Casthon Ludvigsen, Lionel Wright, Keith ' Wright, William Iloskings, Hope Thompson, Joy Thompson, Jean Hoskings, Lois McKenzie, Charlie Potts, Robert Rowan, Alex McDonald and Ernest Neilson.
