S. T. McCABE. eight wickets, in nine innings, but .at a lower cost for each wicket (27.02) than any other of the Australian bowlers in the series. In Test matches against the West Indies team and the South Africans in Australia McCabe was not quite so successful with the bat, though still consistent. He averaged 32.66 against the West Indies side, with a highest score of 90, and 33.50 against the South Africans, with a highest score of 79; these figures arc for Tests only. But in the Sheffield Shield matches of last season he succeeded where Bradman failed failed, that is, by Bradman standards. With a score of 167 against Victoria, but only 46 in four other innings. Bradman averaged 42.80 in Sheffield Shield cricket that season. McCabe,, though, scored 229 not out against Queensland and 106 and 103 not out against Victoria, and so for three innings in three matches he averaged 438 runs. He also took seven wickets m his Sheffield Shield games, at 16.57 runs each. McCabe is, too, a splendid fieldsman. McCabe has. in effect, been maturing in the shadow of Bradman. Out ot the shadow, 187 not out!
