Wanganui Education Board

Special to Times. WANGANUI, Nov. 16. Tho November meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held this afternoon. Present were: Messrs. E. F. Hemingway (chairman), J. Aitkou, T. Benefield, G. S. Coleman, P. Munro, J. S. Tingey, K. Dukeson, Col. Whyte, M. H. Oram.

It was stated that there was no change in the number of certified teachers without permanent positions since the last meeting of the board. Tho agricultural instructor reported that the last visits for the year had been paid to the schools. Particularly good planting had been' done at Russell street, Lytton street and Sanson, also ac llactihi, Omumuri, and Huntcrville. The application of tho Parcwanui school committee for a grant of £349 lor the erection of a new school, was refused, as more urgent works are necd-

About a year ago the Education Department made a grant for two now rooms to be built on tho new sito at Makino road. The attendance has dropped to 35, and it is now considered unwise to build two rooms, and only one will now be erected.

The application of the Ivopano committee for additional shelter-shed accommodation was held over until next meeting.

Although the Wanganui Education Board fully agreed that tho school age should be raised to 6 years, they intend to support the Auckland Education Board in its endeavour to allow five-year-olds living at some lighthouses, and who often havo no chance of attending a school, to attend at the age of 5, if they wish to. "I hope there will be a better response in the sale of Health Camp stamps this year,” said Mr. J. S. Tingey. "The results last year were very disappointing.” It was decided to circularise the Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, etc., and ask for their co-operation, and also to apply for a share of the proceeds, for the Wanganui Health Camp. After lengthy discussion, it was decided to form an intermediate school in Wanganui. Victoria Avenue school has been selected as the school to bo used.

Tho resignations of Miss R. Harty, infant mistress at Ofiakune, and Miss E. T. Higgic, sole teacher at Pakiliikura, were accepted; also those of Miss A. G. Naylor, Tuha, Mis’s G. Kidcey, Paparaugi, and Mr. R. Blennerhassett, Ohakune. Manchester Street School. The Manchester street school committee asked for the grant towards the completion of a drill area, which is being laid down at the school. Mr. Tingey supported the application saying that the work done will be worth £IOO, and will have only cost £7O. "It was being done under the No. 5 unemployment scheme,-” said Mi - . Tingey, "and the committee have already £SO i.u hand.” It was decided that £2O be set aside as a special grant to Manchester street.
