From Our Own Correspondent. Municipal Affairs.

The Mayor (Mr. M. K Pcrreau) presided over the monthly meeting of the Boston Borough Council. Also present were: Councillors Enngiheuca, Barron, Crowe, J. L. Christie, John Boss, It. J. Thompson, Harvey and the town dork (Mr. W. Trueman). Tho treasurer in his luianciai statement showed that during the month the sum of £1074 11s 6d had been received and banked to the district fund. Tho state of tho various ledger accounts wa3 shown as follows:—In credit: Kate arrears, £BO3 17s 2d; cemetery, £BB 19s; heavy traffic, £63 6s Id; library, £33 9s 6d; reserves, £l4O lbs 4d; temporary deposits, £400; workers ’ dwelling, £8 16s 8d; waterworks, £251 10s Id; total, £1790 13s lUd. In debit: Gasworks, £1354 16s 3d; general, £224 1 12s 6d; Hospital Board, £lls 11s 9d; Harbour Board, £47 19s 9d; interest, £1929 5s sd; unemployment relief, £lll 7s 9d; Town hall, £l2O 18s 7d; Town Hall Pictures, £l4 9s 7d; total, £5942 Js 7d. Tho bank account showed a debit balance of £4151 7s 9d. The district health inspector (Mr. S 3. B. Bead) advised that no cases of infectious diseases had been reported from tho borough. Routine inspections had been made and conditions were satisfactory. JE’ivo samples of milk have been taken during the month. The samples complied with the regulations under the Sale of Pood and Drugs Act.” The number of sanitary inspections carried out by the inspector during the month were as follow: —Visits to habitations, 26; to foodseliers' premises, 12; to business premises, 28. In connection with payment for the services of the inspector 1 tho Health Department notified the council that it had been decided to reduce the contributions from local bodies by ten per cent, as from April 1, 1932. An application from the Boston Cricket Association for permission to use both Easton and Victoria parks as playing areas, free of charge during the summer months,, was also discussed at length. It was felt by the council that provision should be made for any junior teams which may also desire, to organise and play, and with this in view it was decided that the permission sought be granted at the pleasure of the council on tho understanding that the Cricket Association undertake to keep the grass in the parks mown and the grounds in good order. Messrs. L. T. Watkins forwarded soecimen copies of a publication entitled “Ladies' Journal,” running through which are articles and illustrations which it was considered would tend to greatly increase and popularise the use of gas cookers. It was suggested that the council should purchase Tegular supplies of the journal and distribute same free among present and prospective users of gas tvithin the borough. The Mayor said the council •was most anxious to do all possible to induce more people to use gas, but he did not consider the expense was warranted at the present time. It was therefore decided not to take any action in the matter.

Tennis Club Sports Gala Night.

The Masonic hall, Poxton, presented a very animated appearance on Tuesday evening on the occasion of the “Sports Gala Night” held under the auspices of the Foxton Tennis Club, which event proved to be one of the most popular of the season, and an outstanding success both socially and financially. The hall was decorated for the occasion with streamers and greenery and a thoroughly happy time was spent by the large number present, included among whom were visitors from Palmerston North, Shannon, Levin and other parts of the district, the free buses which were run from Palmerston North, Levin and Shannon being well patronised. Mr. A. Anderson ably carried out the duties of M.C., while the music supplied by Bred Gedson’s Ace 3 left nothing to be desired. An ample supply of confetti and coloured streamers added greatly to tho fun of the evening. Supper was handed round by the lady members of the club, after which dancing was continued until the early hours of tho morning. Among those present were:—Me»dames J. L. Christie, blue satin; W. M.
