Show Opening and Special Invitations

CITY COUNCILLOR'S QUESTION ■ ANSWERED.

At yesterday’s meeting of tlio committee of the Manawatu and West Ccast- A. and P. Association, Mr. J. F. Carter niado reference to the Press report of the City Council’s discussion regarding the fact that the Mayor and councillors had not received an official invitation to, be present at the official

opening of the Royal Show. The president (Mr. M. A. Eliott) explained that no special invitations had been sent out, it being taken for granted that all who desired: to do so would attend. Ho added that it would have been an utter impossibility to have sent special invitations to everybody who had a right to expect them. Mr. Carter: I think an exception should have been mado in regard to the chief Magistrate of the city of Palmerston North; an invitation to him and the councillors should havo been sent.

Mr. T. It. Hodder: The Mayor Is a vice-president of this association and. as such, should havo been present at the opening ceremony. It was unfortunate that he did not mention that he had received a special invitation to be present at the luncheon. 4 Mr. Carter: Mr. Hodder is barking up the wrong tree. My contention is that the report which appeared in the Press did not do the association any good. Tho Mayor and councillors of the city of Palmerston North hold an important position in the district and they should not have been overlooked. -'Mr. W. G. Shannon agreed in this.

Mr. D. Thomas: This is a Manawatu Association. What about the Mayor of Feilding and the chief citizens of Bulls and other towns in the district 1

The president: Where are you to craw the lino when , you start sending special invitations?

Mr. Carter: What I want is an answer to ; the report which appeared in the Press.

Mr. Hodder: The point I wish to mako is that the Mayor, in not making any reference to the invitation to attend the official luncheon, had not been entirely fair to the association. Mr. H. J. Lancaster: I hope the Press will smooth this matter over for us.' (Laughter.) Mr. Black moved that the City Council be informed that as it had never been the practice of the association to issue special invitations in connection with official functions and in view of the many local bodies in the Manawatu district, it would have been impossible to have sent invitations to all who would be entitled to receive them.

This was seconded by Mr. Carter and carried without further discussion.
