SURF CLUB ACTIVITIES ,

Members of the Foxton Surf and Life Saving Club have, been engaged lately in carrying out improvements on the site of the new club house on the ocean beach. If the Dominion life saving championships are held on the Foxton beach next season as projected, tho new pavilion will undoubtedly prove to be a great factor, in ensuring their success. EARLY MORNING TIRE In the early hours of Saturday morning firo broke out in Mr. S, J. Harvey’s bakchouso at. tho rear of Pcrroau’s buildings, in Main street. Tho alarm was given by Mr. J. Hirini, of Harbour street, and tho brigade, which was promptly on tho scene, soon had tho outbreak under control, thus preventing the flro from spreading to the main business area. As a result of tho outbreak the building and stock wero extensively damaged. Although the exact cause of tho outbreak is not known, it is believed that it started in a heap of wood which, in tho customary manner, was placed in front of tho oven to dry.' The building was insured for £3OO in the Atlas office, and there was also a cover of £2OO on the machinery and iittings. FOOTBALL Tho junior match, Foxton v. Firo Brigade, which was'played in the presence of a large attendance at Easton Park on Saturday afternoon, proved to bo a hard-fought and most exciting game. The teams lined out as follows: —Foxton (yellow and black): G. Williams, B. Coley, R. Colcv, K. Robinson, G. Hirini, *E. Colov, I-I. Hartley, E. Robinson, T. Taylor, W. Melton, D. Richardson, J. Smith. S. Wright, J. Evcrleigh, B. Gav. Fire Brigade (white): E. Stevenson, J. Newton, C. Anderson, N. Easton, J. Hirini, D. Dunn, A. Alexander, R. Roorc. Pedersen, Gregory, E. Devonshire, S. .Sinclair, J. Devonshire, C. McCarthy, S. Bills. Firo Brigade won tho toss and decided to play with the strong breeze from the west. From tho kick-off they carried plav to inside tho Foxton 25, where from a scrum Foxton hooked to Hartley, who broke through to. near half wav, where he lost possession, Dunn picking up and finding touch on tho yellow 25. Tn tho resultant line-out the whites infringed and Williams found touch at half way. The Foxton forwards carried play to near the white corner, where from a line-out. they dribbled over, but J. Hirini forced, from the drop-out Foxton mishandled and the white forwards, headed by C. McCarthy, dribbled down and over the Foxton line for McCarthy to score. J. Devonshire converted. Fire Brigade 5 o. Shortly afterwards G. Hirim was caught in possession. _ From the scrum a likely movement developed when the Foxton pack heeled to Hartley, who transferred to E, Coley, to G. Hirini, to R. Coley, who was unlucky in knocking on. The white backs swung into action, and a golden opportunity was lost when Anderson hung on too long. From the resultant melee the yellows were penalised, but Devonshire missed with tho kick. The yellow forwards now took a hand, and from a scrum “Pluggor” Robinson and. Hartley dribbled through to tho white 25, where J. Newton saved. Hard and willing play was now taking place near the

white line. From a scrum E. Coley nearly got over, being tackled just short of the line. An. infringement by Foxton eased the position, and up and down play followed. The tackling on both sides was deadly, and at this stage Sinclair retired hurt, his place being taken by Bennett. Tho Brigade later worked down to the yellow 25, where from a line-out they dribbled through and over, but Williams saved. Play was now shifted to whito territory. Loose play saw a white player offside, and from a handy position Williams goaled. After the interval the yellows, with tho aid of the wind, carried play to the white 25, where from a scrum Hartley transferred to E. Coley, to G. Hirini, who was caught in possession. Stevenson brought relief by finding touch near half way. Foxton returned to tho attack and carried play to the whito 25. Dunn secured and kicked to Williams, who drop-kicked, but missed. Immediately after the drop-out Foxton again went to the attack, and from a scrum inside tho white 25 Hartley worked the blind side and transferred to B. Coley, who eluded N. Easton’s tackle to cross near the corner flag. Williams converted with a beauty from near the side line. Foxton B—s. Shortly afterwards, from some tight work which was taking place' near the line, Hartley whipped round the blind side and transferred : to B. Coley, who crossed near the corner. Williams missed. Foxton 11—5. Stung, by this reverse, Firo Brigade brightened up and their forwards carried play to tho 25, where from a scrum the white backs swung into action, but the movement was-spoilt by a forward pass by Stevenson. Give and take followed, during which both teams crossed their opponents’ lines, but in each case the ball was forced. For infringements both teams also had shots at goal, all of which were unsuccessful. Each set of backs was unable to get going properly owing to the solid and deadly tackling. The game ended with the "score board reading:, Foxton 11, Fire Brigade 5. Mr. C. Leighton was tho referee.
