The Railways and National Growth Great Key Industry STRANGELY enough, the situation in New Zealand to-day is that the railways have to compete with a form of transport which owes its existence mainly to the prosperity promoted by the railways. The truth of this statement will be clear to the owners of the lines—the general public—when they consider the all important function of the railways in the development of the primary and secondary industries—farming, timber-milling, mining, manufacturing. Railway transport facilitated the economic distribution of the population in rural and urban areas. New Zealand’s social and economic structure rests mainly <pn the railway foundation.
