PALMERSTON PICTURE PROGRAMMES

‘AT THE REGENT PAUL LUKAS IN “THE BELOVED BACHELOR’’ A tender and intriguing love story is presented in Paramount’s “The Beloved Bachelor,’’ the first picture in which Patfl. Lukas appears as the featured lead, showing at the Regent theatre matinee at 2 p.m. to-day. Based on a play by Edward H. Peples, this talkie places the handsome and highly effective Lukas in a role such as his many admirers would have ordered for him, had they a choice in the matter. Lukas, throughout the action of the play, is a thoroughly lovable personage. As a sculptor, who is slowly carving a name for himself in the world of art, he live? quietly in a studio building with two artist-cronies, Charles Ruggles and Harold Minjir. Paul is in love with a beautiful young actress, Vivienne Osborne. But she becomes unjustly suspicious ol his relations with a woman who has been his model, and their romance is shattered. Later the model dies, leaving a six-year-old daughter. Paul, out of kindness, adopts the tot and rears her in his own home. When the ward attains young womanhood she develops an intense love for Paul, but cannot bring horself to tell him of this feeling. Ho continues to treat her as a little girl. Meanwhile he has achieved renown for his creative work as a sculptor. The former sweetheart, now married to a business man, learns of hi? success and meets him again after 8 lapse of 12 years. He still loves her, and sho declares that she will get a divorce, so that they can bo married. But the beautiful young ward, Dorothy Jordan, learns of the renewed love affair and decides it is time to do something on her own behalf. She does something—and the result-is a happy one. The Flying Winskills As a special added stage attraction, the management has arranged for a short season of the world-famous aerial act, the Flying Winskills, which commences with “The Beloved Bachelor.” This remarkable team of acrobats have appeared in every important theatre and country in the world, and their appearance here will be looked forward to with the greatest interest. Arrangements have been completed with J. C. Williamson, Ltd., to supply a succession of novelty vaudeville acts, should public support be forthcoming. KOSY THEATRE i YOUNGSTERS FROM 7 TO 70 WILL APPLAUD THIS FILM Tho finest combination in all-TOund entertainment fox audiences ranging in age from seven to seventy is achieved by Warner Bros, in "Side Show,” at the Kosy to-day. Hero is a story of circus side-show life that has distinctly different and novel features. The teaming of Winnie Lightner with Charles Butterwcuth for comedy results is one of its high lights. Either of these alone would be enough to make the picture an hilarious evening’s fun. Both together, they make it one of the rarest treats it has ever been this reviewer’s luck to enjoy-

It all lies in the vast difference between the Lightner and Butterworth brands of humour, which produce the most intoxicating mixture known. There are the freaks, stunts and animals to please the kiddies. Tho picture is alive with interest in this respect, yet never does the story lose itself in its colourful background. Bvalyn Knapp and Donald Cook provide the love interest around which the picture revolves. Coow gives a splendid performance as tho young barker, the lover of Winnie Lightner, until her sister, Evalyn Knapp, steps into the picture. A more poignant love story has seldom been brought to the screen. Between her moments of clowning, in which she substitutes her humorous side-show freaks—such as hula girl, fire diver and cannibal —-Winnie Lightner demonstrates her versatility. It is she who is torn between love for the barker and for her younger sister who also loves him. The large supporting cast includes beside the woll known circus freaks several players who contribute much to heighten both the comedy and dramatic interest. PALACE THEATRE. "SURRENDER” OPENS TO-DAY "Surrender,” Fox drama based on Pierre Benoit’s novel, 'Aiello,” and directed by William K. Howard, opens its long-awaited engagement at the Palace theatre to-day. It is a drama of uncompromising truth depicting cnc conflict between a woman’s love for a man and loyalty to her country. The girl is betrothed to the son of a retired Prussian general, but she falls in love with a French prisoner of war who has boen detailed to work on the old general’s crumbling estate. Her aristocratic blood urges her to marry the noble son of a Reichendorf, but she finds herself-in the valley of indecision and her heartbreaking struggle with herself is unforgettable. Warner Baxter of “In Old Arizona,” "Such Men Are Dangerous,” "The Cisco Kid,” “Doctors’ Wives,” "Daddy Long Logs” and other outstanding screen successes, portrays tho leading role, and the beautiful Leila Hyams enacts the role of the girl. Tho cast is a large one and includes such well-known stage and screen personalities as Alexander Kirkland, C. • Aubrey Smith, Ralph Bellamy, William Pawley, Howard Phillips, Bodil Rosing and George Andre Bcranger.
