SPANISH PATRIOT HONOURED

NEW STAMP ISSUE

Philatelists the world over always arc interested in governmental changes, as the coming into power of any new government usually is attended by issuance of a new series of postage stamps. The over!brow of the monarchy in Spain and the formation of a republic in Madrid was followed by the scrapping of all stamps hearing the likeness of Alfonso XIII. Many new types of stamps were brought out, the latest being a series bearing the face of Nicholas Salmeron y Alfonso. Salmeron was one of three presidents of Spain, when that nation was a republic, previous to the restoration to the throne of the royal family of which the recently deposed king was the last reigning member. Salmeron was born at Alhambra la Secca, in the province of Alineria, April 10, 1838. He was educated at Granada. As a leader of the republican party he was imprisoned in 1807. On his liberation in 1871 he was elected to the cortes. When Don Amadeo of Savoy resigned the crown, in 1873, Salmeron made a futile attempt to form a republic. Later he became Minister of Justice in Figucra’s Cabinet. Resigning his portfolio, he was made President of the Cortes, and on July 18, 1873, lie was elected' President of the Republic in succession to Pi Margall. Salmeron was exiled in 1881, hut returned to Spain in 1886. On April 18, 1907, an attempt was made to assassinate him in Barcelona. He died at Pau, September 21, 1908.
