New Zealand Artist's Portrait of Gandhi
REJECTED BY ROYAL ACADEMY United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Thursday, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, April 21. A portrait of Gandhi painted by OsAvald Birley, the noted NeAV Zealand artist, when the Mahatma was in London last year, has been rejected by the Royal Academy Council as undesirable for tho Academy’s forthcoming summer exhibition.
The president of tho Academy (Sir Wm. Llewellyn) declares that tho rejection is not for political motives but because the Gandhi portrait was the least important of the three Mr. Birley offered for this year’s show. Tho other tivo accepted are portraits of Lord Invin and Sir Robert Witt.
