Arbitration Court's Future

SUSPENSION OF ACTIVITIES. EFFECT OF NEW LEGISLATION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. A number of industrial eases set down for hearing in the Arbitration Court will probably be dealt with under the new Act when it has received the assent of the Governor-General on Thursday. Members of the Court will leave for Wanganui, sitting there on Friday and at New Plymouth on Monday. Applications in reference to industrial eases have been in suspense owing to the new legislation. All such eases now pending arc to be referred back to the Conciliation Council io be dealt with under the Act and until the necessary preliminaries have been disposed of it will mean that some weeks will elapse before the Arbitration Court is able to deal with industrial disputes.

A few days ago when an industrial dispute was called in tho Arbitration Court, Mr. Justice Frazer said that as soon as possible after tho Act had been passed and had received the signature of tho Governor-General tho Court would make an order referring pending disputes to the Conciliation Commissioner to be settled as required under tho new legislation. The present sitting will conclude with the hearing at New Plymouth on May 2. After that sittings will bo suspended until the work of the Transport Appeal Board is disposed of and the Court will resume its sittings again early in June at Dunedin or Invercargill.
