Wanganui Education Board

Special to Times. WANGANUI, Last Night. Owing to the continued indisposition of Mr. AV. A. Collins, Mr. E. Hemingway presided at tho monthly meeting oi the Wanganui Education Board to-day. Those present were Messrs. M. H. Oram, W. Adams, J. Aitken, E. Dukeson and J. S. Tingoy. An application for a new motor shed sent in by a headmaster was refused, the board having never contributed towards the cost of motor sheds. The architect was asked to report on the matter of a new sub-division fence between the College street school and a neighbouring property. The agents concerned said they were quite willing to pay half the cost, and perhaps the board's workmen could do the work cheaper than any quotation they had received.

To extend the fence along the Arawa street frontage would cost £2O, stated the architect when the Palmerston North Central committee’s application w-as received. He further stated that the committee had taken down the old fence, anticipating that when the repairs were being made to tho school the new fence being erected would be continued down Arawa street. The Minister had refused to consider the matter, he concluded. Mr. Oram moved that the committee be asked to pm*- back the old wire fence in the meantime. The chairman stated that the interim report submitted to the Minister of Education on Tuesday would be released for publication towards the end of the week. Tho whole matter had been gone into thoroughly and some excellent suggestions had been made. The secretary stated that copies of the report would be sent to all education boards and school committees in New Zealand. A scholar, Ireno Stedmans, had attended for seven years without missing a. day at Hikumutu School. The board decided to send a letter of congratulation to the pupil. The Manawatu branhc of the Headmasters’ Association at a recent meeting recommended that new appointments be made a little earlier, so that the new appointee could attend before i his predecessor left. The matter was left to the senior inspector. A letter was received from the Alana-

vvatu County Council notifying its intention of carrying out improvements to the road near Carnarvon School. Dental Rooms Tho whole matter of dental rooms was thrashed out, some members holding that the board was not treating all applications fairly. Some clinics were held in schools and some had to build new rooms. The matter arose from an application to hold a dental clinic in Qucon’3 Park School, Wanganui, in an empty room. It was decided that the clinic bo allowed to use the room, as the same procedure had been followed in several rooms in Palmerston North. Religious Instruction Messrs. Tingey and Aitken wero strongly in favour of Mr. Aitken’s motion that the time for Bible instruction bo increased to 20 minutes from 15 minutes. Mr. Dukeson opposed the motion, holding that it was unfair to allow some children to play while others were receiving religious instruction. Mr. W. Adams said the board was very much in the dark about what tho children did who wero not taken for religious instruction, and the matter was left to the senior inspector for a report. The following resignations were received: Miss M. A. Sutherland, head teacher, Alataroa; Air. G. A. Read, sola teacher, Alain South Road; Aliss I. Alorrison, infant mistress, College Street; Aliss E. M. Leversedge, head teacher, Kaltaramea; Aliss E. Woolliams, assistant, Wanganui Central Infants; Aliss At. AI. Hughes, assistant, Hunterville; Aliss G. Ward, assistant, Kairanga; Aliss E. F. Sage, assistant, Carnarvon; Aliss A. Holst, Wanganui East.
