How They Ran

Easterly Returns to Form The public went for Arrowhead £156), Balloon (£113) and Easterly (£9l) in tho Hurdles, and the dividends were returned by Easterly and Balloon. Adventus and The Sun showed out first from Henry of Navarro and Avro, and the order passing the stands the first time was Adventus, Henry of Navarre, Balloon, Avro, Arrowhead, Palm, Just an Idea, The Sun and Easterly. Going round the turn Balloon went to the front and led into the back from Adventus, Henry of Navarre, Arrowhead and Palm. Tbo leaders bunched at the half mile. Balloon and Henry of Navarre showed tlio way across the top and into the straight from Pn.hu, Arrowhead and Adventus, with Easterly closing up fast. Balloon led over the last, fence, but Easterly, on the outside, immediately challenged and went to the front. Pahu appeared to be likely to get second money, but Balloon responded under pressure and finished a length away from Easterly, with Pahu two lengths back, third. Arrowhead was fourth, and the next to finish wero Henry of Navarre, Gucrcss, Adventus, Avro and Just, an Idea.

Riotous In the Boom The Awapuui-trained Riotous (£225) was favourito for the Autumn Plate, the next in demand being Porlock (£201) and Peschicra. (£173). Porlock was first to show out from the start, and showed the way for two furlongs with Foreign Queen, Copper King, King Thomoncl and Riotous following in that order. Running to the half mile Foreign Queen went to the front from Porlock, Riotous, King Thomond, Traymela and Copper King. The leaders were unchanged into the straight, where Traymela was in fourth place, ahead of Headland, Copper King and King Tliomoiul. Foreign Queen was galloping well, but Riotous headed her at the distance. Headland (hen arrived on the scene, and. in a good finish Riotous won by the best part of a length from Headland, which beat Foreign Queen by a head. Copper King was fourth, and then came Porlock, Trader Horn and Melodrama.

Gold Dawn Just Scrapes in There were 15 starters in the Prince of A Vales Handicap, and a great race resulted in a win for Gold Dawn, after an exciting finish in which the first six passed the post at intervals of heads arid necks. The betting favoured the chances of Eastertime (£295), High Faintin’ (£IS4) and Rational It (£140). The big field gave considerable trouble at the post and there was a false start. When they were finally sent away Chief Cook began best. As the field turned out of the straight Tigerism was in command from Eastertime, Chief Cook, Straight.course, Rational 11, Gold Dawn, Jayson and Shrewd, which were following in that order. Going along the back Gold Dawn moved forward, and led with Tigerism at the half mile from Eastertime, Chopin, Shrewd, Rational II and High Faintin’. Joic de Val moved up as they crossed the top and followed Tigerism and Gold Dawn into the straight, with Chopin, Eastertime, High Faintin’, Rational II and Shrewd next. Once in lino for the .judge Joic do A r al went, to the front. Gold Dawn challenged immediately and then Shrewd, on live outside, and in a very close finish Gold Dawn prevailed by a long neck from Shrewd, which was only half a. head in front of Joie de Val, with Tigerism right, up, fourth, closely followed by Jayson and Rational 11. Chopin was next, and then came Eastertime, High Faintin’ and Chief Cook. Easy for Royal Bengal

Royal Bengal (£289), Seneschal (£213) and Lady Court (£157) were sorted out for the Woodhey Handicap, and they filled the places, Goy was first out from Lady Court, Orby’s Choice, Royal Bengal and the rest in a bunch. Going across the top Lady Court joined Goy in the van, and they showed the way into the straight from Orby’s Choice and Royal Bengal, with Grand Review next, followed by Ganpat. Half way down the running Royal Ben-

gal -went, to the front and won easily by the best part of a length, Seneschal getting up in time to boat Lady Court by a neck. Lady Ronald was fourth, followed by Ganpab and Goy.

Midinette Takes the Honours The Sires’ Produce Slakes was won by the Wanganui-trainod Midinette, which .led alt the way and finished a. neck ahead of Iho favourite, Tea Trader. Inflation did not appear to have a show at the distance, but responded well under pressure and was doing best'at the finish. He made up a lot of ground over the, final bit to get lo within lialf a length of Tea Trader. There was most money for Tea Trader (£387), Alidinetto (£301)) and Inflation (£280). When the barrier went up Midinette began best to load out from La Modorno and Speed. Who nthey had settled down Alidinctte was in front, followed by Speed, La ALodcrne, Tea Trader, Farmer and Inflation. Running for the straight Tea Trader and Inflation moved forward and they followed Alidinctte, which was a couple of lengths to the good, into the straight. In the mn to the judge Midinette maintained her advantage, but she had to bo ridden out to withstand the challenge by Tea. Trader. At the bottom of the straight Inflation flattered his backers momentarily, but ho made little impression on Ihe lenders until near the post. La Aloderne was fourth, two lengths further back, followed by Tout le Aloud and Clangor. Nightmarch Won as He Liked

With three furlongs still to cover in the Awapuni Cup, the finish promised to be an interesting one. At that stage Gay Crest, which had made ail the running, was leading by a shade from Speedmint, with Niglitmarch three lengths back. Onco they turned for

home, however, Ellis moved on t.ho champion and the race was all over. Nightmarch went past the others with t.ho greatest of case and won as he liked by two and a half lengths from Gny Crest, Speedmint being three lengths further back, third, and Gibraltar fourth. Nightmarch was accorded an ovation as he returned to fcho birdcage. The winner was a good favourite, carrying close on twice as much as Gay Crest. The early order was Gay Crest, View Halloa, Nightmarch and Gibraltar. There was little alteration during the first half mile, and the order into the back was Gay Crest, Nightmarch, Speedmint and View Halloa. Running to the half mile Speedmint went up into second place and was almost on terms with Gay Crest when they turned for home. After that there was only ono horse in it. Consent All the Way

Consent was sent out second favourite for the open sprint, and ho led al! the way, winning narrowly from Hampden and Arisus in a good finish. Great. Star was favourite, but the betting took ei wide range. The favourite was never prominent at any stage of the race. Consent was the early leader from Cimabuc, Hampden, Autopay and Aston. At the lialf mile Hampden joined Consent, and they showed the way across the top to Autopay, Lady Qnox, Aston, Hunt the Slipper, Arisus and Arrow Lad. There was no change in the order entering the straight and, once in line, Consent established a short lead from Hampden, but had to be ridden out to get the verdict by a head. Arisus finished gamely and was only half a length away from Hampden, and Autopay was fourth, just ahead of Cimabuc and Lady Quex. High Comedy was next, followed by Great Star and Hunt the Slipper.

Biggest Dividend of Day Fifteen horses were saddled up for the To Alatni Handicap, and in the biggest pool of t he day those carrying most support wero Winsome Hind (£285), Pomp (£251) and The Alirror (£200). Salt pot, the winner, was seventh in the betting order. Pomp led out of the straight the first time from The Mirror, Lyrical, Gaswyn, Saltpot and Winsome Hind. Turning into the back The Alirror, Lyrical and Gaswyn were the leaders, with Pomp, Winsome Hind, In Vain ;aud Saltpot at the head of tlio others, the field being well strung out. Running to the far turn Saltpot and Winsome Hind improved their positions, and they followed The Alirror and Lyrical into the straight. In the run to the judge Saltpot and Winsome Hind drew out from the others and had the finish to themselves, Saltpot taking first money by a head. Winsome Hind was five lengths ahead of Lyrical and Air Laddie was fourth, the next to finish lining Pomp, Fairway, The Alirror and Capetown. The winner paid a nice price.
