HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETINGS

KONGOTEA A fair number of householders attended tho annual meeting to elect a new committee for the Rongotca School. Air. F. C. Saxton presented the following annual report: “Tho health of the children has been excellent throughout the year, and the attendance and conduct good. Improvements effected during the year include a new convenient stile leading from the school grounds into the sports ground, and a concrete path leading from the school grounds to tho stile. The final portion of tho school grounds has been dug, part being used for garden plots and the balance being planted in potatoes preparatory to being laid down in lawn or garden. During the year a school concert was held and sufficient funds were available for the prizes, which were distributed at the annual break-up on December IS. In addition, a special prize has been donated to Miss May Bottcher as dux of the school for the year ending December, 1931. The Calf and Mangold Clubs have been well supported by the school this year. The No. 2 group was the winner of the type championship at the final judging in Fcilding with a very fine calf exhibited by W. Scott, of Glen Oroua. R. Mossop, of Rongotea School, was placed second in the care arid condition class in the groun judging, and Molly Slattery was first in record-keeping. The mangold crops have yet to be judged for the final results. It is pleasing to sec the interest taken by the.scholars in these competitions, and it is to be hoped that they will be continued in the coming year. The committee acknowledges the help of Messrs. J. W. Mossop, C. M. Lind, C. V. Ciochetto, A. Simonson and J. Hughes in’matters affecting the school.”

Prior to the election of the new committee Mr. .T. C. Glover, on behalf of the householders, thanked the outgoing committee for the splendid way in which it had conducted school matters during the past year. The election of members of tho committee resulted: Messrs. W. Mathoson, F. C. Saxton, A. I-lill, O. D. Tunnicliffc, W. J. Amies, J. Duke and J. C. Glover. Mr. L. J. Walker (headmaster) thanked the committee on behalf of the teaching staff, saying that every suggestion the teachers had put forward had always been recognised and carried out by the committee.

At a subsequent meeting of the new committee Air. W. J. Amies was elected chairman, Air. F. C. Saxton secretary and Air. J. C. Glover treasurer.

BUNNYTHORPE Over 30 householders attended the annual. householders’ meeting. Mr. "\V. T. Maxwell (chairman of the committee) presided. The balance-sheet showed that receipts in amounted to £7!) 10/S in the general account, which disclosed a credit balance of £7 9/2. The special account showed receipts amounting to £32 18/11 and a credit balance of £lO 9/.. A vote of thanks to the headmaster and the staff was carried. The headmaster, in reply, extended his thanks to the committee for assistance to the staff. A vote of thanks was accorded the auditor, Mr. G. M. Ranson (Palmerston North), who had served in this capacity for several years. Mr. A. O’Donnell mentioned the activities in connection with Calf Club competitions, breaking up days, etc... as far as the school was concerned, pointing out that three or four days wore partially taken up by such affairs and suggesting that the incoming committee arrange for ns many of these events as possible to take place on one day. This would be of advantage to staff, scholars, committee and all others concerned. He was supported in his contention by Mr. Abraham, and the meeting generally agreed with the suggestion. The householders’ appreciation of his services was extended to Mr. L. O. Pascoc, who for nine years had acted as secretary and had played an important part, in obtaining the present, school building; and to Mr. I-'. Burton, a past committeeman, for his valuable services. A vote of thanks was extended to the outgoing committee members for their valuable work. It was stated that the timo occupied by the upper classes in travelling to I'cilding for manual training was too great for the short period of instruction. ’The incoming committee will deal with the matter. A petition regarding a proposed method of distributing text books was signed by the householders present. A suggestion brought forward regarding the writing materials used in the school was left to the committee. Nine nominees stood for election to the committee, the live elected being Messrs. A. O’Donnell, A. D. Heggie, It. C. Powell, O. Jackson and A. F. .McKenzie. Each gentleman returned thanks for the support accorded him. and each expressed regret that Mr. Maxwell had not been re-elected. A vote oi thanks was accorded the late chairman for his valuable services in the past, and a similar compliment was extended Mr. Sinclair, of the outgoing committee for his services. Mr. Maxwell had been chairman of the committee since tho retirement of the late Mr. J. 11. Dixon about five or six years ago, and had been connected with the committee for a lengthy period. At a meeting of the new committee, held immediately afterwards, Mr. O’Donnell was appointed chairman, Mr. Jackson secretary, Mr. Ranson auditor, and Messrs. O’Donnell and Jackson trustees.

NEWBURY Air. E. W. Collins presided over the annual meeting of householders at Newbury. Tho committee’s annual report stated that the roll (02) was slightly below last year’s. The average attendance of 56 was, nevertheless, an improvement on that of the previous year. Muck interest bad been taken by pupils,

parents and staff in the calf-rearing and mangold-growing competitions. The following prize-winners were congratulated on their success: N. Lord, M. Paul, I’. Collins, G. Linklatcr (calf-rearing), and M. Daleficld (mangold-growing). Of the three pupils presented for tho proficiency examination, two were successful. The ladies’ committee once again had arranged a very successful concert, £S -I/O being raised to augment the funds. Tho annual picnic was held at tho Esplanade on February .19. Special thanks were due to Mr. Small, 311 nr., who arranged the transport, and to ah those who had assisted with donations and prizes. At the end of February Mr. J. Galland, headmaster for the last ten years, had retired on superannuation. The committee placed on record an appreciation of the sterling service he had rendered. Mr. D. P. MeMurray had acted as relieving headmaster pending the arrival of Air. R. P. Callaway, who would commence duty on May 23. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit ot

SANSON. There was a good attendance 0! householders at the Sanson school. The election of the committee resulted as follows:—-Messrs. E. J. Bowatcr (chairman), I. Edwards (secretary), E. J. Davey, E. Wilcoclc and J. Currie. Air. H. V. Bond, the retiring chairman, did not seek re-election ami was accorded a vote of appreciation for his services to the school.

BAINESSE. At tho householders’ meeting at Baincsso three of the old committee retired leaving Air. Regan (late chairman) and Air. Grammar proposed and seconded for the new committee, but as the meeting terminated abruptly this was not put to the meeting and carried, so it is difficult to say what, the position is. No others stood for election.
