Necessary to Preserve National Solvency

GOVERNMENT WILL BUSH ECONOMIES THROUGH Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. In the House of Representatives today the leader of tho Opposition (Mr. 11. E. Holland) asked whether, in view of the unsettled conditions in the Dominion, tho Government would withdraw the clauses in the bill which removed the right of either side to refer the matter to the Arbitration Court for settlement; also whether he would withdraw those clauses in the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill which proposed to reduce pensions and further reduce wages and salaries in the public service.

Mr. Forbes said the proposals in tho National Expenditure Adjustment Bill were absolutely necessary to preserve financial solvency. If they were not passed a greater disaster would be entailed, and tho Government had no intention of withdrawing them. The Industrial Conciliation Act had alrcad} been passed through the House by a substantial majority, and the Government had no ifttention of withdrawing it. Mr. F. Schramm asked whether, in view of the present stale of affairs ih the country, the Government would withdraw the proposal to extend the life of Parliament or submit the matter to a referendum.

Mr. Forbes asked that tho question be put on tho order paper. A similar reply was given by Mr. Forbes to a question in which Mr. Schramm asked whether the Government would compensate property owmers for damage sustained during the Auckland disturbance.
