Moved by pity, Paul Haddon, a wealthy financier, enters into a loveless marriage with Margaret Carey, a penniless widow, but soon after the former discovers his partner, Winchcr, lias been guilty of colossal frauds, and on Iris suicide has to shoulder the blame. On the evo of his arrest husband and wife discover their love for each other, but Haddon, who believes the stigma of prison will always come between their happiness, tells Margaret she must not wait for him, and it is round this decision that tho theme of "The Shadow Between,” showing at the Palace theatre on Saturday week, revolves. Margaret becomes cashier in a restaurant, and when she is wrongfully accused of theft offers no word in her own defence in order that she may go to prison and thus remove tho "shadow betw r een” her husband and herself. The theft has, in reality, been committed by one, Nell Baker, a notorious woman of the underworld, who, on Margaret’s release, visits her flat to persuade her to "come in with the gang.” Margaret Tefuses but it is of no avail and a fow days later Nell arrives with tho proceeds of a jewel robbery. A detective follows lier and arrests Margaret, who pleads for an hour’s rospite, during which time Haddon returns. Nell overhears tho explanations between husband and wife, and is so moved by their love and sacrifice that she not only confesses to the theft, but reveals that Haddon was innocent of the crime for which he was convicted.

The role of Nell Baker is portrayed with deep feeling and emotional realism by Olga Lindo, a newcomer to tho talkie screen, and Godfrey Tearle and Kathleen o’Regan give charmingly sincere performances as the unfortunate husband and wife.
