Traffic Offences
A TALLY PROM PARIS. The traffic police of Paris, according to a motor journal, appear to have been amazingly active during the month of November, judging by the list of “contraventions” issued during that month. This list, -which has been published by the Prefecture do Police, comprises no fewer than 3767 summonses, of which private car drivers received 2370 and taxi-drivers 1277.
Tho list, as usual, is carefully analysed by tho Prefecture, and it is only fair towards Paris drivers to mention that a big proportion of the summonses were issued for offences of a purely technical nature; 1239, for instance, were for “stationnement illicite” (parking in the -wrong place, or exceeding the half-hour limit). It. is interesting to note that this particular consignment of buc paper was shared in almost equal proportions- between private owners and taxi-men, private owners loading bv 661 against 575, while liorscvehicle.‘drivers had 41.
Private owners to the number of 131 and 60 taxi-men were caught out for not stopping at cross-roads when signalled to do so, while 49 pedestrians were summoned for crossing roads in the wrong place, instead of using the marked crossings. Irregular circulation, licenses out of order, etc., amounted to 309, private owners being in the large proportion of 225 to 84. No fewer than 114 taxi-men were had up for " roving,” which is strictly forbidden in Central Paris,'but only 14 for excessive speed! This may come as a shock to many readers who have ridden in Paris taxis and had to be brought round thereafter with brandy, but, on the other hand, S 4 private owners 'clicked’ for speeding, so that they must have gone even faster than the taxis. Finally, orrly 36 contraventions were issued for not keeping to the right.
