Feilding Unemployed

EXTRA GRANT FOR “OFF” WEEK In reply to the Fcilding Unemployment Committee’s representations as to the inadequacy of the grant for the ••off” week, which commences to-day, the town clerk (Mr. N. C. Harding) received the following telegram from the Unemployment Board on Saturday morning: “In the proportion in. which your allocation is given, namely, threetenths for each of (he tir.st three weeks and one-tenth for the fourth week, the allocation notified for flic week ending April 23 is already in excess of the proportionate grant. It is not possible to provide funds to give the men more than one and one-third days, two days and three days in their respective classes each week three weeks out, of four.”

The position was that the grant, for this week amounted to just on £59 for 63 men, and as it was impossible for Mr. Harding to allocate, this sum equitably, the board was appealed to. After receipt of the telegram the Unemplovinent Board wa.s further communicated with and agreed to authorise a further grant, making the sum available £73 6/. This will provide that, the four-day men will receive three days’ work, the three-day men two days, and single men one day. It is likely that some four-day men will receive three and a half days' work this week.
