Manawatu Automobile Association

The monthly meeting of the Alanawalu Automobile Association was held on Friday evening. Those present were: Messrs. N. W. Mackic (president, in the chair), J. Hodgcns, H. E. Edmunds, R. T. Jaggard, S. G. Rosvall, E. It. S. Holbcn, E. S. Oliver.

The City Council wrote advising that it. approved of tho parking patrolmen wearing a distinctive badge on their caps in order that they would not be confused with tljc traffic inspectors. A further letter from tho City Council advised that the recommendations of the association’s camp site sub-com-mittee had been considered and that a number of the recommendations regarding tho conveniences had been carried out while the question of washing sheds, additional accommodation and improvements to the cook-houso would bo re-eonsidered in six months’ time. The sowing of grass seed where rocuircd was also being attended to and the question of additional lighting had been referred to tho lighting committee.

Mr- J. Hodgcns stated that the lighting committee had recommended that three electric light standards be installed which would do away with the present gas light.—lt was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the City Council for the attention given to the association’s recommendations. Mr. W. G. Ross wrote asking tho association to erect a danger sign in Church street east near the corner of. Fitzroy street. —Tho matter was referred to tho signposting committee.

The president reported that owing to a number of complaints being received a letter had been sent to tho engineers of the Oroua and Kairanga' CountyCouncils regarding the tar-scaling which was at present being done on tho Kai-ranga-Bunnytliorpc and Fcilding-Kim-bolton highways. As sufficient screenings were not being put on, cars travelling over these roads were being splashed with tar. —His action in taking the matter up immediately was confirmed. Tho scrvico office reported that he had been approached by several members regarding the charges made at the Foxton Beach camp site. —It was decided to ascertain the charges made by writing to tho Foxton Harbour Board before taking any action. A considerable amount of routine business was dealt with, including the election of 43 new members. • Final arrangements were made regarding free legal defence for members. This benefit will no doubt be greatly appreciated by members as it means a considerable saving in both time and expense where the member is prosecuted for police offences or breaches of local body by-laws. In cases where the offender is guilty of the offence, the matter has merely to be reported to the association and the association’s solicitor attends to the case for the member. Thus the member does not have to appear in Court, the solicitor appearing on his behalf would plead guilty and offer any explanations necessary. This means a considerable saving where tho case is hoard.
