Pahiatua

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Crick"*. The Pahiatua cricketers journeyed to Waipukurau last week-end and met a Central Hawke’s Bay representative team. After being used to a true and fast concrete pitch tho Pahiatua team did not display their true form when playing on a turf wicket, that was, to say the least, “tricky,” and played pranks. Central Hawke’s Bay scored 161 in their first innings (Spencer 37, Padbury 29, A. Smailes 27, D. Smailes 15 and Elliott 1.1) contributing most of the runs. Bowling honours went to G. Stevens 4 for 43, J. McKay 4 for 01 and O. Clark 2 for 20. Pahiatua responded with a first-innings total of 106, of which G. Stevens 31 and C. Irving 26, made more than half the score, the rest of the team finding the wicket conditions too much for them. Central Hawke’s Bay declared with six wickets down for 59 in the second innings, leaving Pahiatua 115 to make in less than an hour. This they endeavoured to do by going for the bowling, bat could manage to up only 65, Stevens and Irving again being tho chief scorers. A return match will p- J'ably be played at Pahiatua later on when the local men ‘ pc to get some of their own back. A disastrous fire occurred at about 9 o’clock on Tuesday evening when the premises of Tulloch’s Drapery and Clothing Co., Ltd., were completely gutted. Fortunately tho weather was quite calm or ,no results might have been very serious, as this shop is in tho centre of tho business area of the town. The brick wall of tho Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association Ltd. on tho one side and Timm’s pharmacy on the other enabled the brigade to confine tho firo to the one building. Being fairly early in the evening a large crowd quickly gathered. Tne brigade did good work in getting tho lire under control, although tho water supply pressure was barely sufficient to cope with such a conflagration.

Cricket and tennis teams from tho Pahiatua District II;gh School visited Eketahuna on Saturday last. An enjoyable time was spent, the cricket being won by Eketahuna by an innings and 90 runs, and the tennis being won by Pahiatua by 7 games to Eketahuna’s (5.

On Tuesday evening the residents oi Pahiatua were treated to a novel “thrill" in tho form of a parachute descent from an aeroplane by PilotOfficer Fraser, of the West Coast. Unfortunately tho plane had been detained in Mnsterton by heavy rain and so arrived rather late at Pahiatua for a very clear view to be obtained of the uescont, except by tho large crowd on the landing field itself. The aeroplane, piloted by Captain M. C. McGregor, of Christchurch, arrived at (5.30 p.m. and after circling the town landed in Mr. T. Mexted’s paddock, and the folding of the parachute by Pilot Fraser occir pied some time, for it is on this that a safe descent really depends. The plane then rose to ,1200 ft., where the engine “cut out" and in the ensuing silence the man’s body could just be discerned falling rapidly to earth, when the parachute was soon to open and tho descent continued apparently very slowly, and as there was no wind he landed oasily in the intended place to the excited cheers from tho onlookers everywhere.

Personal. Dr. and Mrs. H. T. Dawson returned on Tuesday from Au&aiand where the doctor had been attending tho meuical conference. The friends of Mrs. Walter Harrison will regret to hear that her daughter, Miss Lulu Harrison, is still confined to her bed.

Mr. Howard Ball, of the staff of the local branch of tho Bank of Now Houtli Wales, has received notice of his transfer to Auckland. He will be greatly missed, as ho ha 3 been prominent in every movement that has been for the good and assistance of tho community and no doubt a big “howl” of sorrow will bo raised by his band of Cubs wfficn they hear of his approaching departure.
