FINAL GALLOPS AT TKENTHAM WORK DONE IN THE FOG One of tho heaviest fogs for several months enveloped the Trentham tracks yesterday morning, and during much of tho timo that horses wero working it was impossible to see cither the horses or the index marks, except in tho straight (writes “Rangitera”) of the Evening Post.) Tho fog hung along the back stretch and on the turn till well beyond tho lialf-milo practically tho whole morning, and little timing over such distances could be attempted. Tho. plough, which was almost exclusively used, was heavier than it was on Tuesday, having been scarified to a depth of several inches and watered.

Autopay was one of the first horses that were picked up, running tho last three furlongs of half a milo in oSscc. H. Gray, who was among the first persons to arrive on the track, was in the saddle, and he had tho usual difficulty in getting the horse to start. If Autopay takes it into his head to-day he may make a great showing in tho sprint, as ho is in his best condition. Weathcrstcp followed, and sho was picked up at the three furlongs, running home from that point in 36 1-5 seconds. Cricket Bat did the last three furlongs of his gallop in 37 2-ssec. He looks in splendid order. A. E. Ellis will be riding him in tho Thompson, and will also be on other members of the Chokeborc team when ho can do the weights. H. Cutts arrived on Tuesday with tho four Chokcboro horses. Sailor’s Love, Wiusomo Hind, and Fast Passage did strong pace work only, sharpening up in tho straight. Clangor improved on his recent gallops to beat Courtyard narrowly over three furlongs in 35 4-ssec, a good effort on tho part of both horses. Clangor, who is inclined to hang, appeared more at home when allowed tho outside running.

All Humbug is Fit. All Humbug gave further evidence of his forward form by beating Pomp by over a length in a seven furlongs test in lmin 31 4-sscc. No sectional times could be secured. Chrysology sprinted five furlongs, but was hidden in the fog almost all the way. He is to bo ridden in the Thompson by Iv. Voitre. Monarchy finished half a length in front of Miladi at tho end of fivo furlongs, the last throe furlongs being run in 39sec, a not vory satisfactory effort. Mullabodcn and Redtop did the last half-mile of six furlongs in 54sce, the Irish colt having a very slight advantage at the close.

Mrs. A. McDonald’s team all did pace work only over rounds. Those brought down for tho meeting aro Inflation, Chief Marionette, La Modernc, Blacksmith and Chief Clerk. The lastnamed is to start in tho Trial Plate, but no rider has yet been engaged. Inflation, who looks in lino order, will bo ridden by H. Gray, and La Moderne by K. Voitre. H. N. Wiggins was to havo been on Chief Marionette, but will not now bo at the meeting owing to contracting a severe chill. A. McDonald comes back into tho saddle on Blacksmith.

An additional mount for Gray is Esteem in tho St. Leger, also possibly Azalia if sho is reserved for tho fcjnverstream Handicap.

Make Up, who may bo raein.g on the second day, was half a length too good for Lady Rene over six furlongs in lmin 20 2-ssec, tho final half-mile taking 54 l-sscc. On tho course proper High Faultin’ ran half a mile, but could not bo timed. Arena and Cadland did pace work only It is reported that Fiji, who does not appear to havo arrived, will not bo meeting his St. Leger engagement.

Morning’s Best Trial

'l’lio most interesting trial of the morning was a six-furlong gallop in which. Lady Que± and Hunting Cry participated. They were together all the way, Lady Quex on the outside, and they registered the useful time of lmin 16 2-ssec, the final three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. It looked as though they could both have made better figures if required. B. H. Morris will ride Hunting Cry in the Thompson. Gaino Carrington and Midinette slipped over three furlongs together in 30 4-ssec. Poter Jackson and View Halloo wore out working, but it could not be seen what they did. Silvcrmine and Awaken were also on the track doing work. Both look in splendid order. Gay Crest and Pairway ran five furlongs togethor, but they did not come out of the fog till near tho post. The same thing happened with Tho Quorn and Tout lo Mond, the latter finishing about a length in front, but neither appearing to be extended. B. H. Brodie will be riding Tout le Mond. The Quorn is to start in the hack six in preference to the St. Leger, for the distance of which ho has had no preparation.

Tobaccoland again went six furlongs under a pull, but could not be timed. W. J. Broughton will ride him in tho Bailway. Landmark is likely to be produced in the kigkwcight in preference to the hack mile, but no rider has yet been secured for him.

Other riding engagements include J. Barry on Headlady and Royal Bengal, and I. Tilson on Taragona.
