INTER-SCHOOL CRICKET

Palmerston Well Ahead on First Innings GREAT UPHILL FIGHT BY WANGANUI BATSMEN T.ho two-day cricket match between Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Wanganui Technical was concluded on tho High School ground yesterday. Palmerston North had declared their

innings closed with four wickets down for 405, and at the end of the first day's play had dismissed three Wanganui batsmen for SJ. Wanganui continued their innings yesterday and, after a fine exhibition of batting, were all out for 250, Palmerston North having a lead of 155 on the first innings. Hollowing on, Wanganui had lost live wickets, ono man retiring injured, fo 170 when stumps were drawn.

Yesterday's Play Play commenced at 10.15 under ideal conditions, the not-out batsmen , Mcto Kingi and Lavatu, opening to R. Baton and Lang. The first half dozen overs furnished only one run, and then Hatch Mete Kingi’s wicket, Robertson taking a good catch at fine slip. The ,lL board read SS-4-43. £ tiring batsman had played a fine nings. Trask followed, but failed to score, Lang taking him jn the slips in Hatch’s next over. SO— s—o.

A Good Partnership « a typnand then became associated with Lavatu and a long partnership ensued. Many bowling changes produced no effect, Oaglcy, Carter, Robertson and AlcVicar all boin tried. Lavatu was batting very soundly, showing solid defence and driving well when occasion offered. His partner took more liberties nnd had at least one life, McVicar tailing to hold an easy one at mul-on oit Carter. Finally, however, Satyanand went for a drive off Lang and was clean bowled. 157—6—39. Revell did not last long, hitting one of Lang's to Cutler at mid-off.

Lavatu Dismissed Lavatu and Pargeter carried on until tho last ball before the luncheon adjournment, when the former was brilliantly taken by Robertson, who was fielding close in at mid-off, off Ongley’s bowling. 209 —S —63. Garter opened the bowling after lunchcon from the hostel end and very soon obtained Pargoter’s dismissal, the batsman hitting his wicket. 211—9

The Tail Wags The last wicket partnership proved productive, Hastings hitting out well, while Connor was content to stay there. Finally Hastings went for a big hit oil Onglcy and was clean bowled, the innings closing for tho respectable total of 250. Lavatu and Mcto Kingi had been the outstanding batsmen and had given an excellent display. The Palmerston North fielding, except for one or two easy chances missed, was good. Wanganui’s Second Strike Wanganui, following on, commenced their second innings at 2.45 and opened with Connor, the not-out man, and Mainwaring. Lang’s first over was fatal to Connor, R. Hatch accepting a chance at fine slip. Lang was now bowling from the school end, and Hatch from the hostel end. Gregory and Mainwaring were associated in a long partnership, the usual change bowlers being tried without result. Both batsmen were playing very steadily, not, taking many risks, but scoring at times ■with excellent shots all round the wicket. Lang was bowling better from the school end and finally obtained Mainwaring’s wicket with a catch oft his own bowling. Mete Kingi had a short career, being clean bowled by K. Hatch in his second over.

Gregory Injured E. Hatch had replaced Lang at the school end, and Gregory had the misfortune to be struck on the hand by one of his fast deliveries and retired—an unfortunate end to a fine fighting innings. The Palmerston North captain was trying various bowling changes. After Fletcher had had one over, Cutler was given the ball and sent up a variety. The experiment was successful, Lavatu being clean bowled with a yorker. This was the last wicket to fall, Trask and Satyanand playing out time. The former in particular gave a very nice display, showing good scoring shots all round the wicket. Palmerston North Bowlers’ Trying Day The Palmerston North bowlers had a tiring day, but kept a good length throughout. The fielding was of a good standard to the end. The wicket played excellently and showed no sign of wear.
