Pahiatua

A splendid warm rain set in on Thursday evening and by 9 o’clock Friday morning half an inch of rain had fallen with,every prospect of more to follow. This was most welcome as the pastures were completely dried up on most farms and caused the milk supply from the dairy farms to fall to a serious extent. Though the rain will assist to keep tho supply going, it has come too late for the cows to “pick up” much.
Recently top-dressed paddocks especially showed benefit by tho rainfall. Fahiatua and immediate surrounding parts did not get any of the rain that fell last week. On the east, north and south districts more or less heavy rain fell. ,
Tho local unemployment relief and self help committee (called the ‘Crash’ .Club) are strongly represented from all organisations and sports clubs in *he town and district. On Friday even-
ing last (tho 19th.) they made a house-to-house collection of any sort of soft goods, which they will distribute from a depot in Main street to any unemployed or needy families. A small charge for the goods is to be made and charged up against wages when earned. It. is proposed to open the “shop” on Tuesday and Saturday of each week.

urday. Mr. H. Ahrens, who won one heat at the dirt track meeting on Wednesday at Palmerston North (and who had a good chance of finishing first in another when his chain broke) left on Friday for Nelson to compete in motor sports there-
