Woman as Village Patriot
Gestinghouse in Essex is not a celebrated village, but is not without a famous Parish Council. It is Mrs Pannell. She is tho Parish Council. Sho is all that there is of it . Sho is like the longshoreman of W. S. Gilbert’s Bab Ballads who was The cook and tho captain bold And the mate of tho Nancy brig And the bo’sun tight and tho midshipmite And the crew of the captain’s gig. The explanation is that nobody elso in the parish can he found to servo on the council. The farmers are too busy, and efforts to stir up what the chairman of the Essex Local Government Committee called a hit of local patriotism have failed to produce any candidates. Consequently tho committee had no choico other than to constitute tho patriotic Mrs Pannell as tho council.
