Chamber of Commerce Deliberations
To the Editor. Sir,—la your report of the proceedings at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerco on Monday you report me as having stated that “it would be dangerous to approve of free exchange and a reduction of fixed charges without a cut in salaries and wages, etc.’’ Now, sir, this is distinctly wrong. My statement was perfectly clear that it would bo dangerous to approve of a free exchange, allowing the rate to touch 30 per cent., without the reduction of all iixed costs, and adding that numbers .1 and 2 on the agenda paper should go together. I further stated that the reduction of salaries and wages should not bo put into operation before tho general reduction of all fixed charges. This has been my contention all along, and it was not likely that I would advocate anything different at the meeting.—l am, CtC- ’ W. H. BROWN. Palmerston North, Feb. 19.
