MANY GIFTS TO TREASURY British Official Wireless. Received Friday, 7 p.m. RUGBY, Dec. 31. Heavy instalments of the income tax totalling some £200,000,000 are due for payment next montn. The authorities express confidence that the money will he forthcoming Liefore the end of the financial year. Many notable examples of practical patriotism are recorded in which taxpayers have waived thenrights to- repayment of the tax. Surtax payers have in some cases added lifts to payments which they made in advance. Voluntary gifts of money ranging frem fifteen pence to hundreds of pounds have been sent to the Treasury and gifts in kind, consisting of pieces of jewellery and other valuables have been received. The revenue authorities state that nc such, demonstration of public determination to meet the crisis has been experienced since the war. The Inland Revenue Office announces it has already received £72,000,000 advance payments out of the income tax due on January 1. Many firms are assisting employees by advancing the full sum without interest and the moneys will be deducted from salaries during the next six months. The Treasury’s anxiety to collect three-quarters of the year’s income supertax quickly is due to the fact that State expenditure at present is financed, by Treasury Bills on which the country is paying five to 5k per cent. A quick payment will mean a huge reduction in the cost of interest. PRIME MINISTER’S MESSAGE. British Official Wireless. Received Friday, 7 p.m. RUGBY, Dee. 31. The Prime Minister, in New Year greetings to the nation, refers to the past year as one hard struggle which had borne heavily on all sections of the community to prevent the crisis from developing into a catastrophe. The message adds: “One bright feature, However, has distinguished the old year—the determined and gallant way in which the great mass of the people have recognised the difficulties that confront tlio country and have braced themselves to face them. The task to which all of us have to bend ourselves is to keep that spirit alive till we win through to better times. The Government faces the New Year" determined to act in a manner worthy of the confidence so freely given to it."
