Mr. Edward McGrady, of the American Federation of Labour, advocating Federal relief for the jobless, told the Senate committee that the American salary and wage earners on the basis of their 1929 pay lost between 18 and 20 billion dollars in 1931. He estimated that there were 7,500,000 totally unemployed and 6,000,000 others working but three days a week or less. He stated that may wero waced with starvation with emphasis upon the difiiculties of the mine workers in seven States. Meanwhile the United States Roman Catholic heirarchy for the first time has formally announced its approval of Federal appropriations for unemployed with the presentation of the report of eighty bishops which asserted: “We are convinced due to the vastness of the number suffering that Federal and State appropriations are necessary.” A representative of the National Roman Catholic Welfare Association presented the Bishop’s plea.
