How They Ran

In Vain and Beaconsfield Fight It Out. In Vain was installod a warm favourite for the Trial Plato and she only won after beating another Awapunitrained horso in Beaconsfield. Paioneono was the early leader from Vane, Beaconsfield, Pukepapa and In Vain, but running to tho half-mile Pukepapa moved up to Paioneone and the pair showed the way across the top to Beaecnsfield r|id In .Vain. Running to the straight the favourite closed on tho leaders and the trio turned for homo in line just in front of Beaconsfield. Once in lino Barry pushed In Vain to tho front and at the distance Beaconsfield joined issue. Just short of tho post Beaconsfield had drawn level with In Vain's girth, but from that on the Weathervane filly held him, easily winning nicely by half a length. Paioneono was a couple of lengths back third and there was another gap to Umpire, the next to finish being Ahdeek and Pukepapa. Whangarei Horse Wins Hurdles,

Arrowhead was entrusted with half the support on the machine for the Hurdles, but the race was won by the Whangarei»trained Snow Prince, which paid a fair price in a one-dividend field. Arrowhead led Snow Princo out of tho barrier and tho two wero well clear going through tho straight the first time, Okapua bcyig third a couple of lengths ahead of the others. The only alteration along tp back was when Whisogne moved up allcad of Okapua. Running to the half-mile Snow Prince joined Arrowhead in the van and they were together crossing the top) and into tne straight. They took the last jump together aitd though Arrowhead gained a slight advantage Snow Prince had no difficulty in accounting for the favourite in the run to the judge, winning by a good half-length, the weight telling against Arrowhead. Whisogne was five lengths further back third and Okapua was fourth. Adelphi at a Short Price.

Only five horses contested the Now Year Handicap, while tho price about Adelphi, tho winner, was .very short. Spcaropa and Adelphi were the iaet to move from an indifferent start and Swjftray and Invictus took up tho running to lead out of the straight from Abbey Queen. Spcaropa went round the field and led along the back from Swiftray, Invictus, Adelphi and Abbey Queen. Abbey Queen moved forward half a mile from home and with Spearopa dropping back as they raced across the top, the order into tho straight was Swiftray, Abbey Queen, Adelphi, Spcaropa and Invictus. Abbey Queen was under pressure early, but could not go on with it and Adelphi set out after Swiftray, getting up in timo to win by a neck. There was a gap of close on to five lengths to Abbey Queen and Invictus was fourth. Great Race For the Cup.

The Cup was a good betting race. D'cscrt Song (£418) was favourite, but there was plenty of support for Esteem (15288), Ruanui (£286) and Nightmare (£280). Following a good start Esteem, from, the outside position, led through the straight with Nightmare, Desert Song (under a good pull), Ruanui, Grand Jury and Billion. The order wa3 the same until they approached the halfmile when the field closed up. Crossing the fop Ruanui, Desert Song and Billion were racing together in front, followed by Esteem (on the rails), Nightmare, and Grand Jury. And this is bow they turned into the straight. The leaders swung out a bit and Thompson, pushed Esteem through against the rails. At the bottom of the straight there wore four in lino and in a great finish Esteem did best to win from Desert Song by a length, Nightmare being a length and a a-half further bdre?: third. Ruanui was fourth and Billion fifth, Hoihoma Wing Nicely. . Interlocutor, Sastrugi, Hoihoma and Furlong were weli backed in the Juvenile Handicap whiSh was won by Jdoilioma. Interlocutor was first out from Chief Marionette, Sastrugi and Hoihoma, but as they raced for the straight Hoihoma took command and, having a good lead when they straightened out lor the run to the judge. Interlocutor and Sastrugi were next followed by Priscilla Verne. The leader was never threatened in the run to the judge, winning easily by two lengths from S<strugi, which was half a length ahead of Chief Marionette. Arena was fourth and Priscilla Verne fifth. Chief Marionette appeared to be unlucky and it was not until w T ell down the straight that she got a run and she did well to get to within a length of the second horse. Leisure Finishes Gamely.

There were six starters in the open sprint, Equitant and Leisure carrying over half the machine. Equitant led out from tho barrier and after they had gone a furlong Equitant was in' front followed by Acora, Leisure, Ari-

kinui, Statuary and Monsogne in Chat order. There was no alteration crossing the top except that Arikinui went round the field and there was little between Equitant, Arikinui and Leisure as tliby turned for home. The three were abreast passing the stewards’ stand, but Leisure finished best to get the verdiftt from Equitant. Arikii/n was third, only necks separating the three. Acora was fourth. Hystride Beats Haulbowlino.

Haulbowline and Lady Court were sorted out by tho public for the last evont with Sanguine King next in demand. Haulbowline, from tho outside, began best and, with a furlong covered, v;as showing the way to Abbey Queen, Lady Court and Sanguine King. Crossing the top Sanguine King moved up ahead t«*» Lady Court and was in attendance on Haulbowline when ho turned for home. Lady Court was in third placo ahead of Abbey Queen and Hy* stride. In the run to the judge Haulbowlino drew out, but Hystridc got a run on tho rails and finished well to win by a length. Haulbowline was a length and a-half ahead of Sanguino Kisg ahcl the next to finish wore C(\irt Lady and Abboy Queen. ACCEPT,ANDES FOR TO-DAY.
