India Government Will Crush Opposition

VICEROY SPEAKS OUT United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Friday, 9.50 p.m. DELHI, Dec. 31. , The Viceroy uttered a stern ■warning to Congress in. a speech at the annual dinner to the European Association at Calcutta last night, declaring that an attempt by any organisation to impede the constitutional programme, whether by a no rent-nio revenue campaigning boycott or by a defiance of the law, would be utterly crushed. The India Government would not hesitate to give local Governments all reasonable powers to deal with any situation that might arise ana if Congress leaders chose to start a subversive campaign at a moment when all should be co-operating to establish responsible Government, they would find tfie India Government action supported by the Imperial Government and by the Princes and people of India. The Viceroy appealed for general co-operation in bringing terrorists to justice. He said the Government was determined to move as rapidly as possible with constitutional reforms and nothing would be allowed bo impede them. Meanwliile, Congress is working in committee in daily session at Bombay. For the present they have deferred decision as to future action, pending anticipated talks between the Viceroy and Gandhi. A new phase of terrorism was entered in Calcutta last night when Bangai Ashutosh Ncogy was called from his bed by a man claiming to bo a friend and was shot dead on tno doorstep. The murderer escaped. Neogy was a Crown witness in a recent armed robbery case in which several Indians were sentenced. SENSATIONAL INCIDENTS. Received Friday, 10 p.m. CALCUTTA, Dec. 31. The topic of tho city this morning is an incident at tho Grand hotel last night when tfie Viceroy was dining with the European Association. It was known that escaped terrorists from Chittagong are In Calcutta and had threatened to shoot somo officials before they wero caught. Nearly two hundred police guarded the precincts of the hotel and while dinner was proceeding, a well-dressed Indian was seen by a European sergeant slinking along the corridor. When challenged, ho refused to give his name and was thereupon searched. A loaded revolver was found in his pocket. The Indian was roughly handled and taken to polico headquarters where an inquiry proved that ho was the private secretary to a Maharajah residing at the hotel. FRONTIER DISTURBANCES. Received Friday, 5.5 p.m. DELHI, Dec. 31. The Government’s firm measures in the north-west frontier province is proving effective in crushing the Red Shirt movement. Tho situation generally has improved, although. Peshawar city is still disturbed. A hdoligan element, encouraged by tho subversive activities of tho Red Shirts, created trouble last night. One hundred and fifty were arrested and troops were held in Teadiness outside the city to deal with a recrudescence of rioting. TO SHOW WORKERS’ STRENGTH. ONE-DAY GENERAL STRIKE TO BE CALLED DELHI, Dec. 30. The Indian Trade Union Congress has decided to call a one-day general strike on February 4th, to “reveal the strength of the workers throughout the country.”
