A London cable announces tho death of Mr. Chas. P. Scott, editor of tho Manchester Guardian.
Mr. C. W. White has been appointed secretary of tho citizens’ committee of the Palmerston North Garrison Band. . Mr. J. N. Grant,' of Wellington, wellknown in Palmerston North, was admitted to a privato hospital in Wellington on Thursday evening and oporated upon. Reports to hand stato that his condition is satisfactory.
The Governor-General has received official advice that the King’s police medal has been conferred upon Constable Frederick Arthur Horace Baker and Constable Walter Sydney Hammond, of tho Now Zealand Police Force, in recognition of conspicuous bravery displayed by them in their endeavours to rescuo members of the crew of the steamer Progrdss which was wrecked at Ohiro Bay, Wellington, on May 1, 1931. The King’s police medal was instituted in 1909 as a reward, 1 ‘ only for acts of exceptional courage and skill or conspicuous devotion to duty,” to officers and men of any recognised police force or organised fire brigade in the United Kingdom, India and his Majesty’s Dominions beyond the seas. The number of medals awarded in any one year shall not exceed 120. —Press Assn.
