CENSUS FROM THE AIR

Aeroplanes have been pressed into queer jobs, but the queerest of all is that of taking tho census of wild animals. In Utah, the machines have been used in taking an accurate census of the elk in a region 30 miles long and 18 miles wide. They were counted by aerial observers after six flights, this method providing a better cheek than the periodic estimates resulting from ground observation. The count was attempted after stockmen claimed that the elk were becoming so numerous as to do great injury to cultivated lands. The air census showed 351 elk on the range. The counters said that at a low altitude it was so easy to spot elk groups. The check was made at a time when there was little opportunity for the animals tc conceal themselves.
