Bishop Criticised
BROTHER PRELATE’S REMARKS
ALLEGED MENTAL CONFUSION LONDON, August 4. “The Bishop of Birmingham, Dr. E. W. Barnes,, does incalculable injury to tho Christian Church by his crude accusations of magic and superstition, which come entirely from a mental confusion,’ J says the Bishop of Gloucester, Dr. A. C. Headlam, in an article in tho diocesan magazine. Referring to Dr. Barnes’ recent phrase, ‘ ‘ the so-called miracle of the Mass,” ho says the method of stating tho action of the Eucharist is customary among imperfectly instructed theologists, but. does not represent the Church’s teaching and conception. Dr. Headlam adds: “How is it possible that the bread and wine can in any way be tho channel of grace unless in some sense that which is conveyed is present? There really is no great difference between what Dr. Barnes teaches and -what ho attacks. Both forms of doctrine have been recognised as legitimate within the Church.”
