Foot-and-Mouth Disease
DANGER IN PACKING,
_ A stricter enforcement of the rogulations relating to tlie introduction of 3iay, straw and chaff packing from Britain and the Continent, as a precaution against foot-and-mouth disease, has been decided on by the Department of Agriculture. In a letter to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce the director of tho livestock division, Mr J. Lyons, states that the regulations in queseion are still being contravened and it has now become imperative that they be strictly enforced. The regulations provide, inter alia, that goods packed in hay, straw or chaff packing from Britain must be accompanied by the necessary certificate of declaration either on or with the invoice, from the exporter or packer, countersigned as correct by a responsible officer appointed by the High Commissioner for New Zealand, to the effect that the packing has been disinfected to the satisfaction of that officer. Hay, straw, or chaff packing from the Continent is absolutely prohibited. “In the past, tthe're such packing has arrived eontnary to the regulations, ” says the letter, “it has been the practice to allow the goods to be landed and unpacked, subject to the packing, as the case might be, being destroyed by burning under the supervision of an officer of the department. It has now, however, be'en'decided that, as from September 20, this practice will not be continued, and permission will not be given to laud any goods arriving after that date contrary to the regulations."
