DEVIL’S ISLAND ESCAPEES
LONDON, July 28. Three fugitives from near Devil’s Island, the notorious Trench penal station olf the coast of South America, will go free as a result of a decision of the Privy Council. They, are Pierre Retzengcr, a Frenchman serving 20 years for murder; Clrrille Caullier, a ..Frenchman on a life
sentence for attempted murder; and Gregoire Kossekcchatko, a Russian, serving two years for political murder. Tliey escaped last year, with eight others, in a boat, which capsized in the shark-infested sea. Two disappeared, and the remainder landed at Trinidad, where they were immediately arrested in accordance with the law authorising the apprehension of persons suspected to .nave escaped from French Guiana. This tmables the Guiana authorities to apply for extradition.
Tho three appcllunts, suing in forma pauperis, based their ease on technicalities, including tho objections that France had not supplied evidence that the crimes Were committed under French jurisdiction and that the Magistrate’s committal order was irregular and invalid.
The Privy Council admitted the ap peal, and will give its reasons later.
