CUT CITY EDUCATION COSTS, NOT COUNTRY
Use Flock House for New Zealand Youth
MR LINKLATER’S BUDGET SPEECH
British Official Wireless WELLINGTON, Last Night. Speaking during tho Budget debate in the House of Representatives to-day, Mr. J. Linklatcr (Manawatu) said ho was disappointed that the Minister of Education could see very little scope for economies. The education system had been investigated by a committee, but very little had been done to carryout its recommendations. Ho regretted that more facilities were not being given to country children to enable * them to attend secondary schools. The elimination of remote allowances would mean that only the least efficient teachers would be available for the backblocks, and the children living in those parts would suffer. He was in favour of the education vote being cut down in tho case of those within easy reach of schools, but he hoped every facility would be given to rural children. Mr. Linklatcr said that as a result of tho Flock House scheme 750 boys and girls bud been placed on the land, and 95 per cent had been settled permanently, The attempt to settle New Zealand boys on the land without previous training had been a failure, and the Flock House trustees were very concerned about the problem of tho future of New Zealand boys and girls. They were prepared to go to considerable limits to give New Zealand boys and girls an opportunity of going on the land, and some time ago had offered the Government tho facilities of the girls’ farm at Palmerston North at a small figure. It was hoped, as there would be no more girls and few boys coming out under the Flock House scheme, that it would be possible to assist the Government under tho scheme, so long as the trust funds were not encroached upon.
