Mr M. H. Oram United Candidate For Palmerston

PLEDGED TO FORMATION OF NATIONAL GOVERNMENT

Mr. M. H. Oram, the well-known Palmerston North barrister and solicitor and president of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, lias acceded to a request from a large number of prominent citizens to stand at the forthcoming general election as a candidate in the United Party interests, pledged to the formation of a National Government. Bom at Christchurch in 1835, son of Mr. M. H. Oram, Mr. Oram was educated at Wellington College, later entering Victoria University College, where he graduated B.A. in 1907 and M.A. (second-class honours in mathematics and mathematical physics) in 1909. In the latter year he won the Sir George Grey scholarship, while in 1912 he obtained the degree of LL.B. In debating, he won the Plunket medal, the Joynt Challenge scroll and the Union prize. He was on the staff of Wellington College from 1909 to 1911 and came to Palmerston North in 1912, since when he has been in practice here as a barrister and solicitor. For three years he was at Base Records, Wellington. Mr. Oram has been actively connected with public body and educational work during his term of residence here. At present he is president of the Chamber of Commerce and one of the Palmerston North urban area representatives on the Wanganui Education Board. He has been a member of the High School Board of Governors for a number of years, while for several terms he was a borough councillor.

The United party headquarters announced to-day that Mr. Robert Darroch, secretary of tho Wellington branch of the Navy League and secre-tary-treasurer of tho Cancer Campaign Society, will be tho official candidate for tho Wellington Central scat in the party’s interest at the general election. The sitting member Mr. P. Fraser is a supporter of the Labour party.
