Notes of the Day

Tho Fcilding Borough Council, at its meeting last evening, deferred consideration of tho proposals of tho Eden Chamber of Commeroo that steps be taken to bring about legislative action for the reduction of interest payments on local body debentures by at least 14 per cent. Tho Mayor (Mr. C. E. Taylor) doubted whether tho time was ripe for such action; nevertheless, he felt that if the existing state of affairs continued and there was no improvement in tho prices for our primary produce, it would not bo a ease of a depression, but a change to a now order of things. He would say that tho situation required the council to exercise very great care with its finances. Cr. A. 0. McCorkindalo was appointed by last evening's mooting of the Fcilding Borough Council to represent tho borough on tho electoral committee to elect a local bodies’ representative on tho Board of Managers of the Fcilding Agricultural High School. “I think it is a matter for congratulation that there is such a splendid feeling of loyalty among the old pupils for the school,” said Mr. A. C. Buist, at Wednesday evening’s meeting of the Board of Managers of the Fcilding Agricultural H : gh Bchool when remarking on. tho outstanding success of tho recent school commemoration day celebrations. The speaker could only attribute this to the work of Mr. L. J. Wild, the principal and his stall’, for he was certain that such a spirit could not exist without it coming from tho school head.

The old Aorangi bridge has been completely demolished and the timber slacked at the Oroua Bounty Council's yard. The cost of demolition was £10(1 and it is considered that timber to the value of approximately £3UU lias been salved. Tins will be snared by the original contributing local authorities in me proportion to which they contributeu towards tho upkeep of the structure. In a letter the Oroua County Council requested the Fcilding Borougn Council at its meeting last evening to tako steps to remove its quota. The timber is all totara and in very good condition. At last evening’s meeting of the Fcilding Borough it was agreed to dispose of the council’s horses, drays and Harness, as it was considered that theie was no longer suliicieut work to keep them economically engaged. There remain but tw r o horses ox the council’s original complement, much of the woik formerly done by the teams having been taken over by motor transport. It appears that the two horses are not always suliicicnt for the w'ork lcquiicd of them and the council has had to hire other teams and according to a report submitted by the borough engineer it would be more economical for the borough to dispose of its horse plant and when necessary hire tho services of horses and drays. On the financial aspect the engineer considered that a saving of £IOU per annum could be effected by disposing of the complement. During the month of July 12 cows, 12 oxen, ST heifers, 51 ewes, 324 wethers, 59 pigs, 3 vealer and 2084 B calves were dealt with at the Fcilding municipal abattoir. Fees amounted to £lO9 as compared with £ll9 13s Od for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of £49 Os Od. The Fcilding Orchestral Society propose staging its third concert in a few weeks’ time, when the programme wil. comprise: ‘Ballot Egyptienne’ (suite), ‘Zampa’ (overture), ‘Maritana’ (selection), ‘Morning, Noon and Night (overture) ,‘Glow Worm’ (idyll), and ‘Waiata Poi. ’ The Oroua river was in flood again yesterday, presumably on account of the waters from the melting snow on the ranges. One case of infectious disease (scarlet fever) was reported in Fcilding last month. „ , During the month of July seven miscellaneous building permits were issued in Fcilding for works valued at £205.
