Miss Margaret Stoughton, of Ashe, ville, N.C:., can claim the distinction of being among tho first women in the United States to pass a civil service examination in forestry. Recently Miss Stoughton has been appointed on the staff of a forestry experiment station in the Appalachian district, her rank being that of “Junior Forester.” She is splendidly equipped by nature for this unusual career, being of athletic build and extremely active. She has always enjoyed tramping through the forests, suitably dressed for the part, so that her present duties for the Government are but another phase of her accustomed outdoor life. Her work as junior forester includes the study of trees and the placing of the official tag of the Government on such specimens as meet the necessary qualifications,
