Wilkins’ Hazardous Venture
SUBMARINE ADRIFT IN THE ARCTIC. DESPERATE STRUGGLE WITH MACHINERY United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. TROMSOE (Norway), Aug. 11. The submarine Nautilus is reported to be adrift in the. Arctic. She suddenly stopped shortly after leaving Tromsoe and the crew worked all night in an unsuccessful attempt to effect repairs.
The submarine Nautilus, with the explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins abroad, left Plymouth on July 28th for the Arctic, via Bergen. A cable from New York, dated July 31st, stated that Yilhjalmur Stefansson, the svell-known Arctic explorer, believed that Sir Hubert Wilkins would be unable to reach the North Pole this year’because of the fact that the summer was so far advanced. The submarine being used, lie contended, was old and unfit for work, and Sir Hubert might be forced to turn back. On Sunday a steamer from Tromsoe (on an island off the north-west coast of Norway), bearing a reception committee, and scores of fishing boats going out of escort the submarine to the harbour, found her drifting owing to damage to the electric steering gear. After assistance, the Nautilus reached the beflagged quayside. AWAY AG-AIN.
Received Wednesday, 7 p.ra. TROMSOE, Aug. 11. The Nautilus has resumed its voyage.
