(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mrs. H. Blythe, who has been, on a visit to Scotland, returned to her home at Mangaore on Friday. On Monday evening next tho Church of England social will be held in the Parish hall. No charge will bo made for admission, but ladies aro asked to bring a plate. Tho Mangaore Social Club has donated £3 3/ to tho local relief committee to be used for tho relief of distress in Shannon. The committee has also received a donation of a boast from Mr. T. McGill, of Koputaroa. At the committee meeting on Monday evening votes of thanks were passed to these donors.

Thirty players took part in tho ouchro party held on Tuesday afternoon by the Croquet Club. Mrs. B. G. Taylor wou the first prize aud Mrs. Black tko second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mosdamcs Aim and Morgan. Mrs. Snclling will attend the annual meeting of the Manawatu Croquet Association at Palmerston North to-day as the local club’s delegate. The monthly meeting of the Mothers’ Union was held on Tuesday afternoon, there being a good attendance of members. A letter of sympathy, accompanied by a small gift, is to be sent to one of the members, Mrs. Harold Woodmass, who has been in hospital for some time.

The following mombers of the Public Works Department outside staff - left Shannon on Monday for Palmerston North on transfer: Messrs. H. Wiblcy, S. Morrison, Ousley, W. Wilson and Polglase. At the meeting of directors of tho Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., ou Monday it was decided to pay out 1/2 per lb. for butter-fat supplied during July.

Three nominations have been received for tho two vacancies on the directorate of the Shannon Co-opera-tive Dairy Co., Ltd.—Messrs. J. Cliry.stall, R. L. Tippler (retiring members) and L. Fletcher. A ballot will be held at the annual meeting of shareholders on Saturday. Girls’ Club Tho attendance at tho Girls’ Club continues to be excellent, and at the last meeting the 40th, member was enrolled. Tho roll call, “My Idea of a Perfect Holiday,” was responded to by all present, many novel and varied ideas being forthcoming. Tho main item of interest was a prepared debate on “That Woman’s Place Is in the Home.” Mrs. McKenzie acted as judge and congratulated the girls on the high order of the speeches and the spiritedly contested debate. A short verse competition, “Our Social,” brought forward a large number of entries, some clever and amusing verses being the result. The final awards went to Dot Davies 1, C. Snelliug 2, H. Gardner and M. Whitell equal 8. In the final of the ping pong tournament M. Coates defeated V. Quarrie 24—IS, thereby annexing the championship.

The next meeting will be on August 20, when the roll call will be “My Best Cure for tho Blues.” Mrs. Parcell will attend and conduct a community sing. Golf Saturday was an ideal day for golf and there was a good muster of players for the medal and flag matches. Very few playors returned cards worthy of their handicaps, this no doubt being due to lack of practice owing to the bad weather. Tho men’s medal was won by V. Pope, a first-year player, and the ladies’ by Mrs. VentrySmith. Pope also won the flag match. In the L.G.U. medal competition Mrs. Morgan handed in tho best score for the seniors. Next Saturday a Shannon men’s team will travel to Palmerston North, while a ladies’ team from that club will visit Shannon. The following have been selected to represent Shannon: — C. Stern, MeKonzie, H. Stern, Morgan, Campbell, Mabey, Ventry-Smith, Goodwin, Stevenson, Blackwood, Bovis, Brann, Pope, Thurston, Moocly, Colo; Mesdamos Morgan, Moynihan, Easton,. Cronquest, Ventry-Smith, Elvines, Bovis and Hennessey, Misses Easton and Stern. Any lady unable to play is requested to telephone Miss Stern. All members are asked to bring a plate. The draw for the second round of the ladies’ junior championship is as follows: Mrs. Easton v. Miss Brown, Mrs. Bovis v. Mrs. Ventry-Smith, Mrs. Hennessey v. Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Morse v. Mrs. Robinson. All matches are to be played by September 6. Primary Schools’ Football On Saturday a trial match between teams selected from the onrthern and southern areas respectively of the primary school districts was played at Levin. After the match the selection committee chose the following team to represent Horowhenua in tho quadrangular tournament at New Plymouth: Full back, Vertongen (Foxton); threequarters, Whjley (Ohau), Paipa (Ohau), D. Hair (Levin); five-eighths, Wallace (Levin), Alexander (Foxton); half, Roach (Shannon); hookers, Meddings (Levin), Hayes (Levin); lock, Royal (Ohau); supports, Woollett (Levin), Allen (Levin); back row, Williams (Foxton), Astwood (Shannon); wing forward, Slack (Lovin). Reserves: Forwards, Piko (Otaki), Webipeihana (Ohau); backs, Tamihana (Levin), Fogden (Levin), Harris (Shannon).
